Description
This is a model I created in 2005 when I was near the end of my one-year 3D course. We were asked to choose a final project. Most stuck with knocking out a level in UnrealEd. I wanted to do something a bit more challenging and so for whatever reason I had the idea of creating and rigging a three-legged low-polygon character. Considering I had no custom-rigging or character modelling experience at the time it was probably a dumb idea.I finished it anyway and animated it walking, running and jumping. This model was originally created with just a few thousand polygons which I then sub-divided with the intent of generating a normal-map. Sadly the software we were using didn't yet support normal-maps so I left the subdivision on to give a better impression of what it would look like. All the surface details are hand-modelled including the spots, which took ages to do. I'm aware of the texturing problems and certain modelling glitches; i've learned a lot since then and wouldn't repeat those mistakes, this is just meant to be a blast from the past.
"Xerxes" is the alien inhabitant of a dry desert world. He is evolved for toughness and speed. If you look at the full-version you'll notice he also has three partially-merged pupils to give him a wide field of view. Gills in the torso draw air directly into the lungs allowing him to run at high speed and for great distances.

Iβm not supposed to tell you this, but there was a real deceased alien code named βXerxesβ similar to yours. Unfortunately for you, he looked more like Sonic the Hedgehog than THAT. (He officially died of exposure to coronavirus btw)

That design is out of this world!
Great alien concept--it's so imaginative.

wow. I like.
Is there a purpose for his feet being that way? Or did you just like how it looked?

My favourite number is three. So he has three pupils, three legs and those split into three "mini-feet". I also thought they could act like curved springs to absorb shock and help him balance, since he doesn't have ankles in the traditional sense.

rofl, very nice modelling. you don't happen to know of any sites where I may get unrealed tuts for the new engine?

I haven't really checked since Unreal Tournament 3 is a bug-riddled mess (I think the new patch helps this a little bit), but apparently the "Limited Collector's" edition of the game comes with 10 hours of video tutorials in the package itself.

The story behind the model makes me very impressed indeed!
