Description

Here's the version of the Christmas picture without the drawn style effect which I used on the other version: I can't decide which version I prefer so why not upload both? Yay. Hope you all had a pleasant Christmas Eve and now I'm off to bed. Goodnight!

The beard deco is epic I think Kearon would have the idea together with Myra and Cas is just the type to play along.

Me too, the comic style is a bit hit or miss and I think it didn't fully work here. I hope you had great holidays

I like them both. The problem with the toon shader is it can't handle the nuance of the skins resulting in noise. I wish there was a way to do the outline, and designate details....Β  Merry Christmas!

Ulysses3DArt In reply to PopularDuo [2020-01-02 16:04:35 +0000 UTC]

Oh, this isn't the toon shader, it's actually a Photoshop Action meant to recreate the look of Grand Theft Auto illustrations. It's a mix of vector and some other effects. But it also does the same thing. Detailed skin turns into coloured noise. I'm still trying to work this over but messing with the layers that the action creates.

I hope you had wonderful holidays

I have done some vector work using those actions. The results can be neat. I found for me- the larger the image the less noise. So I rendered them very big, and then ran the action, to reduce the noise. I wasn't always successful, but did some good ones that way

Ulysses3DArt In reply to PopularDuo [2020-01-03 00:31:33 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I also render quite large (5000x4000px) and then I usually scale down to 2000x1500 before posting because that also helps to bring stuff together that I did in postwork (hides the flaws XD). The most noise I get is from very detailed skin. Like body hair which is part of the texture, all stuff which I usually am very keen on. I can't stand those porcelain doll textures a lot of vendors, especially at Daz, do. I want imperfections etc (Tempesta3D from Rendero is a good example, her skin textures are amazing). Those textures create a lot of colour noise and sometimes the PS Actions aren't really set up to let you adjust things later on. Guess it needs more experimenting but we'll see where it goes

PopularDuo In reply to Ulysses3DArt [2020-01-03 03:38:47 +0000 UTC]

Interesting, I wonder if a toonier skin might produce less skin noise. I shall have to try that. Although I agree, details are better for standard Β renders maybe china doll is better for toons?

Ulysses3DArt In reply to PopularDuo [2020-01-03 17:16:50 +0000 UTC]

It might work better but changing the texture also alters the look of a character big way.

yeah, I can see that. it is very difficult to find goo skins with character, which is why I still use a gen 7 skin for Owen.Β

All my characters have G8 skins save for Tariq, he has one for G3, I think. But I recently changed Jonathanβ€˜s skin texture. Sometimes you really find gems which work so well.

well, it certainly shows you pick your skins with care. =-) I like what you've chosen for Jon's skins thus far. I will have to pay attention and see if I can detect the difference. I confess to sometimes having trouble with Boyd's skin.Β

Ulysses3DArt In reply to PopularDuo [2020-01-03 18:57:07 +0000 UTC]

I think these two pictures make it more obvious: Tuscany SunsetΒ  This one still has the old skin. It's from Renderosity, one of the sets which resemble the boys from Supernatural. I think this skin was supposed to be like Jensen Ackles'. It's a really good texture with a lot of detail. However, when Tempesta3D released "Alaric" (www.renderosity.com/mod/bcs/al… ), I totally fell in love. Her textures are amazing as they not only have imperfections, this one also gets a slightly "spent" look with the dark circles under the eyes etc. which is perfect for Jon who not only doesn't take perfect care of himself but also is a heavy drinker and night owl.

Help me hold on to you Β

In addition to that, the tattoo on this texture looks incredibly realistic. I also tweaked his face a little, but the texture overall was what the character needed to finally work as I wanted him to.

I can see why you upgraded. I do agree Alaric is perfect, although the Jensen-Like skin was okay, Alaric, does have a nice level of detail. Very good choices I must say! I like it.Β

Thank you My biggest problems were Tariq and Syd, the characters of colour, of course. Tariq has a texture which is actually meant for an Indian character but that works well with his origins in Oman. Syd was the biggest issue. He's supposed to be a certain level of perfection but also not that much that his skin would stand out among the other characters. It's incredibly hard to find well-made texture sets for men of colour. Though still better these days than during the time of Mike 4.

Yeah. Although sometimes, oddly when I look at my older renders, they aren't that bad. I think Gen 7 guys, were pretty trollish, and I do prefer Gen8, but M4 and the like had some nice skins. Plus I really like those characters by Liquid Rust. They have that nagel look, lol.Β

Boyd's skin is supposed to be very dark tan. There aren't many skins that tone, without being really red, or black. I also am very picky about eyebrows. I dislike the really weird arched ones many PAs put on their male skins. I prefer even eyebrows, which are hard to find. I find the arched brows look really exaggerated and I have a difficult time looking at them.Β

Ulysses3DArt In reply to PopularDuo [2020-01-04 02:40:05 +0000 UTC]

Oh, M4 was great to work with, especially in the later years. People came up with fixes for his obscenely round shoulders (which sadly often showed in his clothes and needed fixing in postwork) but you could do great stuff with him... as long as your characters didn't have significant height differences. Velkan was supposed to tower over almost everyone else and I resized him but of course, the clothes didn't follow that back then. Re-adjusting the clothes to his size was always so annoying. I often just resorted to having him float a bit so that he was taller than Jon. Overall, M4 was great though. I started out with M3 and it was close to impossible to get unique characters with that generation.

Jon is actually biracial so his skin should be a little darker but I never really achieved that. The new skin has that to a degree but it's very hard to go both a little darker and blond. Eyebrows are really a big thing. Some characters have horrible arched brows which just look so weird.

I think people are used to making female characters with those Jafar style eyebrows.Β  I am wary of buying characters with eyebrows halfway up their forhead Unless they intentionally are depicted as plucking and shaping them that way.

It also adds too much expression. I prefer to do my own expressions and when the eyebrows are so janky, it gives them either a cruel or suprised look, neither of which I want, at least not all the time.Β

Ulysses3DArt In reply to PopularDuo [2020-01-04 20:07:14 +0000 UTC]

I'm very much the same. But, and that sounds incredibly arrogant, I know, the expression doesn't seem high on the list of a lot of 3D works. I completely obsess over it, like, I think that it looks incredibly lifeless if the eyes are left in the zero position and things like that.

PopularDuo In reply to Ulysses3DArt [2020-01-04 23:41:35 +0000 UTC]

Agreed. You can really tell if someone doesn't put any energy into their poses by the dead eyes, and the lack of expression. I made.... My own signature smiles which I use for the guys. It saves me time, when dreaming up expressions, to have some designed for the faces I am using. Since honestly, a lot of storebought smiles are downright maniacal.

Oh gosh yes. There are some PAs on Daz, I won't call out names publically, but oh boy, their expressions are nightmarish. And the worst offenders are sets which dial in expressions together with a pose. Okay, now let me zero the head again because I don't want him to look like the Joker.
