Description
For whatever reason I really wanted to draw crocodile!onix again, and hopefully with my improved drawing ability it's better than the ones I've drawn before.Added some 'researcher' notes to easier jot down my ideas. It's not realistic per se since it allows for the pokemon to have mystical abilities (like the drilling technique here).
Also how else do you explain an animal that moves at 80 km/h underground?! I didn't even mention the speed. Presumably their top speed is considerably lower, but they ambush prey from underneath as many other designs already show. Hm hm!
Edit: Oh geez, forgetting stuff left and right. Paper texture from here: [link]

Makes me think of the basilisk from harry Potter the way the head is shaped

Eh, many animals have very special and unknown capabilities in the real world, like the pistol shrimp's huge pincher, it's been known to disrupt submarine signals if I recall. o3o I really like the appearance of this Onix ^^

Well, admittedly the pistol shrimp's pincer is based on a collapsing bubble of air, it's still more feasible than a psychic shield that drills earth. <
Thank you kindly~

Eh, guess you're right there, do you plan on making any more of these? owo

I might, my problem is that whenever I plan/promise to do more of something, I never do! :C I have fondness for this field-researcher style of worldbuilding though... Got to figure a pokemon to redesign next.

Maybe Larvitar, Pupitar, and Tyranitar? Or Deino's family? o3o

Hm, yes. Those seem like sensible choices. Shall look into them.
(I started doodling one based on unowns - I always feel awkward posting something immediately after someone suggests I do something related to it, but it's probably better than just sitting on it for no good reason.)

Mhm o3o And I always wondered what Unown would be if they were made to look as if they were real.... Maybe some kind of insect? Β Like some kind of strange beetle-like animal

I personally imagine unowns would be kind of brain-breaking as dimensiontravelers - completetly 2d and always facing you, even if you looked at it from a mirror. Of course, I didn't think of this while drawing the doodles because I wasn't sure what kind of a world the onix inhabited.
As a realistic animal, perhaps a stick-insect with a frightening wing pattern in the form of a giant eye it can flash at folks. Hrm hrm.

That's how I usually saw Unown as, since they usually came in huge groups. And maybe they could have inspired the native humans of the Pokemon world to create their own language, inspired from the shaping of the Unown's wings.

The canon explanation looks to be the "they inspired the letters of the pokemon world"... I remembered a theory someone made about pokemon being created from ideas and memes humans have. That'd be a super-interesting world concept for a kind of more benevolent silent hill-style pokemonworld. Also very creepy to imagine these psychic manifestations replacing the natural animal-life on the planet. D:!

Holy-
That is such a fantastic concept!
He looks ten times more bad ass than the original!
I love how he lept too, hell he looks so much cooler...
I would rather own one of these beauts instead of the one in the game-

It'd be very fun to make a semi-realistic/monster hunter style pokemon game. Fight giant charizards with your puny sandslash! Wrestle a king steelix to the ground! Dive to the sea and see a glimpse of gyarados! Hm, it might be a fun thing to practice 3d modeling with.

I bet they would be a more attractive option for trainers than the canonical onix? Better statistics and skills. :3c

You can always try if you really want to?
I used a photograph of a real crocodile head as a reference for how to construct the head, so looking at those might help you as well. !

Thank you! I drew an alligator's head before starting on this, so maybe I managed to impart some gatoryness on that design too.
It was certainly fun enough to work at, will have to consider doing more. :3
