EDIT: TUTORIAL ON BODIES FOUND HERE: [link]When viewing a lot of Warriors groups, I noticed there were a lot of fans out there who are trying hard, but needed a few nudges in the right direction. That is why I created this tutorial.
Obviously, I am by no means an experienced pro, I just hope that this will help some people out. If this tutorial is received well, I will continue and do one on the body, and then perhaps a miscellaneous one for things such as expression.
Here are some tutorials on dA that I find helpful.

Thank you so much for posting this! I've been having trouble with drawing cats recently because I haven't been practicing very much. (moving and school and shiz) It was very informative and funny too! I totally agree with the emo bangs thing because it makes me cringe too. I add only a couple of strokes for a small patch of head fur to differentiate cats and give them character but the ungodly colored OCs and the random human head hair is one of my biggest pet peeves!

You're welcome and thank you at the same time, I'm flattered! I'm actually in the middle of a drawing consisting of 8 different cats and I am indeed giving a few of them small fur tufts on their heads to distinguish them.
Of course, people can do what they want, but especially when you're just starting out, it's ill-advised to cover up a bunch of the drawing (in this case, the face and head) with something easier to draw because you find the head difficult. If people really want to draw sparklecats, they should have a good handle on drawing every part of a cat's body first!

Oh~ I don't think I could draw so many cats at once! (<---Fails at drawing things in the size ratio of other things) Is it a Warriors Fanart or just cats? (can't wait to see it ^^)

Actually, it's a Homestuck fanart where I just... turned them all into cats.
I'm a really quality artist.
I don't know if I'll upload it, but if you'd still like to see it, it's here! [link]

I do draw the freak-emo-bang-growth thing, and my own habit has started to annoy me lately, now especially that realism is mentioned. <3333
This tutorial is amazing, by the way! Thanks for the advice <3333333333 Fav!

Man, I know a lot of people do it, and I really hope I didn't offend anyone with it! To each their own style, but a more realistic one shies away from lots of what's popular nowadays.
But thank you for the kind words and the fav! I really appreciate it. <3

Oh my gosh, this helped me so much. I hate when people try and make cats like emo teens. It's insane. Plus I can't get the muzzle right but now I can! Thankies!!

I never really consider myself to be a very helpful person, so I'm glad this tutorial ended up doing what I intended it to do! The best comments are the ones where you get told that the commenter feels they can now draw [body part] better than before, because it's the best feeling ever when something suddenly just clicks. You're welcome!

eh i like cats with bangs and such. But i don't over do it... I like it when my cats have some tufts of messy hair sticking out of thier heads and such. It just makes cats look cute in my opinion X3 but people may belive and think whatever they want
btw very nice tutorial! X3

It really depends. I myself use a little bit because it adds to characterization, but it's more like tufts of fur on the top of their head, not hanging down over their face and beyond their chin. To each their own, however!

Awesome tutorial. It'll be really helpful for aspiring artists!
Admittedly, I put bangs on a lot of my cats, lawl. Usually I add them on females to differentiate them from the males. Although, I mainly do this when making Warriors fanart because the characters are so personified anyway, I feel it adds to the character. But I see where you're going with this. If it's overdone, it just looks awkward.
As far as my OCs go, I tend to not add bangs, haha.

Uncognoscente In reply to Kytes [2010-08-19 21:42:16 +0000 UTC]
Thanks!
Actually, you're one of like... 3 people I've seen ever who can genuinely pull hair off and make it look good, amazing, flawless, etc. etc. It adds nice characterization if it's not terribly overdone and if the artist can pull it off.

Well said
For drawing the muzzles I just draw a sphere, add a little triangle nose and kind of shape the muzzle around it... It's not exactly a foolproof way of doing it but it works for me...

That last comment about cat emo bangs - thank god someone shares the same opinion as me. I hate long, emo hair mops...just...eugh.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Uncognoscente In reply to Acey-J [2010-08-14 22:37:10 +0000 UTC]
It just doesn't look good, to my eyes. If it's just slightly longer than normal fur and kind of fluffy so it doesn't cover the entire cat's face like a mop, then I'm fine with it, but an upside-down teardrop shape that hangs below the cat's (or any animal, really) chin is just not sightly to me.
