the words are hinting at what, how, and why the shadow is doing what it is.
a simplified explanation is that, by manipulating its shape and density, it can assume a form that causes "fear", captures prey, and consumes it. by consuming life, it grows and gains nourishment from its spirit. the shadow exchanges a lifeforms free will for immortality, turning each body into a sort of immortal organic battery, which continuously powers it.
