Description
How can I just let you walk away,Just let you leave without a trace?
When I stand here taking every breath with you
Oooooh
You're the only one
Who really knew me at all
How can you just walk away from me,
When all I can do is watch you leave?
'Cause we've shared the laughter and the pain
And even shared the tears
You're the only one
Who really knew me at all
So, take a look at me now
Well, there's just an empty space
And there's nothing left here to remind me
Just the memory of your face
Take a look at me now
Well, there's just an empty space
And you coming back to me
Is against the odds
And that's what I've got to face
I wish I could just make you turn around
Turn around and see me cry
There's so much I need to say to you
So many reasons why
You're the only one
Who really knew me at all
So, take a look at me now
Well, there's just an empty space
And there's nothing left here to remind me
Just the memory of your face
Now, take a look at me now
'Cause there's just an empty space
But to wait for you
Is all I can do
And that's what I've got to face
Take a good look at me now
'Cause I'll still be standing here
And you coming back to me
Is against all odds
It's the chance I've got to take
Take a look at me, now…
"Against All Odds" ~ as sung by Phil Collins
Never were there two more devoted unicorns than Amethyst and Darkheart. Darkheart was Amethyst's whole world. So, it was a devastating blow to her, and a terrible shock to the other unicorns, when he left her and never returned. Regardless of what happened, Amethyst waited every day for her beloved mate.
She waited, and she waited, but he did not come back.
Thus, Terence was born and raised without knowing who his father was. Amethyst never told him much; the truth was simply too painful, too much for her to bear, and she didn't want to saddle her young son with such a burden. Tragically, she and Darkheart would never cross paths again, for by the time Darkheart came to his senses and was about to take Amethyst as his mate once more, she had fallen at the hands of human hunters. Darkheart never had been fond of humans (he would kill one if he could get away with it), and losing his precious Amethyst due to their cruelty and greed only intensified his hatred for them even more.

I get you perfectly. Amethyst was warned constantly about Darkheart's savage nature, and her own parents were opposed to the relationship, but she figured he couldn't be all that bad. Again, Darkheart's not evil, but he is very distrustful and quite unpredictable.
You could say it's like Beauty and the Beast.
When Darkheart left, some felt Amethyst must have done something to deserve it and therefore turned their backs on her (remember, unicorns are known to mate for life; it's a sacred bond that should never be broken), but most felt sorry for her.

So what if he's very distrustful and quite unpredictable a lot of people/unicorns are, doesn't mean that they are evil just misunderstood. And I can see it to. Awwww poor Amethyst, I know the feeling about the mating for life, when Aries lost his mate he never loved again same thing with Michael even if he did remarry a few times he never touched another woman (his reason was to be a father figure to the woman's children). I would feel sorry for Amethyst too if I knew her.

But she was there to pick up the slack when Terence was born. Though she knew she couldn't be both his mother and his father, she did her very best to take care of him. She showered him with lots of love, and in the end, she gave her life for him. Tristan, Terence's brother, became bitterly jealous because of this.
Not only did he lose his father (he was there when it happened), but he felt his mother loved his little brother more than she loved him. He felt neither of his parents really loved him, or cared. This is one of the reasons why he has such a pompous attitude about him; he tries to make himself "important". But he did look after Terence after Amethyst died, until Terence could take care of himself. If Tristan and Terence ever run into Darkheart (and there's a highly good chance that they will; I'm warming up to the idea), Tristan would be the one to recognize him.

You go girl! Awww poor Tristan, that's a lot for a young unicorn to take on. I'm glad he did though. I doubt Darkheart and Amethyst loved Tristan less than they did Terence. Ooooo that would be cool if that did happen. Does Tristan know that Terence is no longer a unicorn?

Oh, yes, Darkheart and Amethyst both loved their first son dearly; but Amethyst did pay a little more attention to Terence when he was born, because he was her last link to Darkheart, because Terence was so small and helpless, and by that time Tristan could pretty much look after himself. And yeah, Tristan does ultimately know of his brother's human transformation.

I bet they did! I can see the reason why, true little ones do take up a lot of your time, . Cool how did he take the news? Just what is the age span between Terence and Tristan any way?

That's good to hear, I bet he was shocked at first though, I'd love to see the look on Tristan's uh nose when those two met after Terence's transformation. I'm sure you will, I have that same issue with a few of my oc's, I'll figure it out one day.

Oh, yes, it was. But in time, he decided that in either shape, he was still Terence. Tristan and Terence do love each other, deep down, and both would be devastated if anything happened to the other.

I bet. Now there's a true brother for ya, loves ya no matter what you look like! That last part sounds an awful lot like my mermages, Sea Lance and his younger brother Nimbulan (Lance and Lan for short). If any thing happened to either one of them the other would be devastated, they're that close. Makes me wish I had ref pictures of them both.

Aww, poor Amethyst. I really feel for her here. Such a sad story for her. Sad for both her and Terence really. Him not knowing who his father was.
As sad as the scene/story is, I think this came out beautifully. Something about the setting sun effect the way the sky looks. Very gentle.
Also, nice to finally see Amethyst in your style. I hope to see DarkHeart in your style soon as well. Maybe him and Amethyst together.
Great work.

Oh, you can count on seeing pictures of Amethyst and Darkheart together. In fact, I'm about to draw something like that right now. And since Darkheart is still alive, there's a very, very good chance (extremely likely, in fact) that Terence will meet up with him in my story.
But I imagine that'll be quite a meeting, considering how Darkheart feels about humans and how Terence interacts with them, even lives as a human himself. Like it says in the description, Darkheart will kill a human if he can get away with it. And since he's so big and strong, it's pretty obvious he would always come out on top.
Darkheart's not evil; he just learned to never trust humans, and he sees how they already slaughter other animals, even other unicorns. That's why he despises them the way he does. Amethyst, on the contrary, was very sweet and gentle with humans, and found them quite fascinating, despite their seemingly barbarous nature. But she will fight humans if she has to, if they attack her or someone she loves.
She ends up giving her life trying to protect Terence.

Wow. Thank you very much; until now, I never knew anything about his parents. This is very fascinating stuff. Darkheart's views remind me a bit of King Triton, actually, only more intense.
Yes, I imagine Darkheart will not be pleased when he's is reunited with the son he never knew, only to find out he is in love with a human... to say nothing of living like one! That will create much tension and controversy between them, I imagine. Is it farfetched to say that Darkheart will turn his back on his son... or, in his sheer rage, try to kill him as a traitor (esp. because his own mother fell to humans), and even try to kill Rheilia?

unicorn-skydancer08 In reply to Shychick [2010-08-09 22:12:44 +0000 UTC]
Darkheart is sort of a mix of King Triton and Kerchak from "Tarzan", and yes, with more intensity. I don't know yet how he and Terence should meet, but I imagine it will be quite a meeting. Tristan would be the one to recognize him first, because he was there when Darkheart left. He was little more than a colt at the time, but it was something he never forgot. He didn't understand then why his father went away, and throughout his life he wondered what he could have done to make his father hate him.
So, Tristan is as affected by Darkheart's departure as anybody, if not more.

Why did Darkheart leave, anyway? I meant to ask, but I'd forgotten.

Oooh, I thought of that while reading. O_O
I imagine their reunion will not be a pretty one. And since you said darkheart does not like humans...I just wonder if he bumps into Terence as a human???
Even so, I understand where Darkheart is coming from. Poor guy. No wonder he'd hate them.
I just hope Terence can make him see that they're not all bad.
*sigh* It's a shame Amethyst was killed by them, she thought they were nice and all. So sad.
A very interesting plot you have here. Keep it up.

I think it's a great idea to put common problems like that into a story. In fiction/fantasy etc, you can often use them as a metaphor for those things.
Like how vampires are often portrayed as a metaphor for alot of different things, not just mindless killers.
(ahem excluding Twilight. Rofl. )

Sadly too true. But at least in fiction the writer can bring these issues to light...even if it is with Unicorns, Vampires etc.
That's what I like about metaphors.
