I never saw it until a few years ago, when I was baby-sitting for two kids. The family had rented the movie and the kids wanted to watch it again while their parents were out, so I let them. I caught a few glimpses of it while fixing dinner for the kids (the living room was just outside the kitchen, and there were no closed doors), and it looked fascinating.

I'd recommend reading it. There's a lot of symbolism in that book, and some parts are a bit tricky to read. But once I've read it three or four times, I fell immensely in love with it.
