Description
The unicorn lived in a lilac wood, and she lived all alone. She was very old, though she did not know it, and she was no longer the careless color of sea foam, but rather the color of snow falling on a moonlit night. But her eyes were still clear and unwearied, and she still moved like a shadow on the sea.She did not look anything like a horned horse, as unicorns are often pictured, being smaller and cloven-hoofed, and possessing that oldest, wildest grace that horses have never had, that deer have only in a shy, thin imitation and goats in dancing mockery. Her neck was long and slender, making her head seem smaller than it was, and the mane that fell almost to the middle of her back was as soft as dandelion fluff and as fine as cirrus. She had pointed ears and thin legs, with feathers of white hair at the ankles; and the long horn above her eyes shone and shivered with its own seashell light even in the deepest midnight. She had killed dragons with it, and healed a king whose poisoned wound would not close, and knocked down ripe chestnuts for bear cubs.

They don't look anything like horses. I don't know where people got that notion. Four legs and a tail, yes, but the hooves are split, like a deer's hooves, or a goat's, and the head is smaller and more -- pointy -- than a horse's head. And the whole body is different from a horse, it's like saying a snowflake looks like a cow. The horn looks too long and heavy for the body, you can't imagine how a neck that delicate can hold up a horn that size. But it can.

Not too terribly pleased with how this picture turned out, but oh well.

Everyone has their own idea of how unicorns ought to look. And hey, no one's actually seen a unicorn (at least there's no foolproof evidence), so no one really knows for sure how a unicorn should look. A unicorn is really any beast with a single horn. The very word "unicorn" literally means "one-horned" or "single-horned".

For me, personally, I like to imagine unicorns as creatures that are sort of like horses, only they are way different from horses -- they're faster, stronger, more fierce, more gentle, and a great deal more graceful and majestic. And, of course, they can talk!
Have you ever seen "Bambi" or "Bambi 2"? My character Terence, if he were animated, would walk just like the Great Prince -- smooth and steady, with dignity and pride, never once stumbling or faltering.

I know I shouldn't get my hopes up too high, but it would be super-awesome if Terence was indeed featured in a movie. It would literally be a dream come true.
If I had things my way, the movie would be animated like Disney's "Enchanted", only it'd be animated all the way, without live-action sequences. And if I could pick any actor I wanted to do Terence's voice, James McAvoy would be my first choice. Elijah Wood would be my second choice. Every time I set foot in a movie theater, I keep thinking to myself: "Oh, this'll be me one day; one of these days, they're going to show my movie in here." I just can't shake that kind of fantasy.

I already own the movie (the new 25th Anniversary edition), and I'm expecting a copy of the novel in the mail. Both of them are really good!

Yep! The book was written in the 1960s, and it's become a classic. You can find it on amazon.com, or you can check out the library.
You should read it sometime, if you ever get the chance! If you thought the movie was good, then you'll love the book!

Okay, thanks. You know, I'm surprised they haven't re-made the film. With all those wonderful special effects they've got now, I can just imagine what they'd do with it.

I love this movie and the book. Nice job on her, it looks just like her from the movie.
Did you know they are working on a live action version? I don't know when it's due out, soon hopefully.

Yeah, I've heard rumors of a live-action version. I don't know if the rumors are really true or not. I hear that Mia Farrow (who played the unicorn in the animated version) hopes to play the part of Molly Grue. I also hear that Christopher Lee, who played King Haggard (and Saruman in "Lord of the Rings" and Count Dooku in "Star Wars"), is interested.

Here's a link for teh Last Unicorn movie I came across [link]
I do hope it comes to theaters, it would make an awesoem movie, if they don't screw it up. I hate when they turn a beloved book into a movie and mess it up. They did that to Eragon.

That's a great film. I didn't know there were books too. ^_^ Great art, I love how you did her eyes.
I think if you rounded her nose out a bit more, she would look a bit more natural with the rest of your style.

Hmmm. Maybe I did make the nose a tad too pointy. But then again, "Two Hearts" does describe the unicorn's head as being a little on the pointy side.
