Nereus was aware something was changing; but this wasn’t what he had been expecting.

At first there was shock, for Nereus a deep feeling of betrayal struck his chest. It was an arrow that had hit sharply on his self-righteous core. How could they abandon everything they had worked towards in Ice Empire? His mind reeled off horror stories of empires falling to the hands of hunters. They couldn’t just leave Ice Empire when it had provided them such love and protection for so long! In a morbid sense, they could almost be hypocrites. Were they?

It took the hybrid awhile just to consolidate the thoughts before he could even face asking questions. His mother had carefully explained why they were leaving, but it took further inquiry before he understood their reasoning. Just as they were responsible to Ice Empire, they were even more so for the family. If moving the family could remove some of those risks, overall it would be for the best for them to do so.

Of course, knowing the reason was very different to believing it.

As time passed, and cats made up their mind whether they were going to travel with their parents or not; anxiety for them crept up in Nereus like the coming departure date. Would he be able to follow these signs the family was supposed to leave them in the future? What if they were washed away by the weather? What if the family never made it to this better land? What if he was then alone?

These thoughts plagued him, and an overwhelming feeling of loneliness for the future made itself home in his heart.

One day, his troubled expression made its way to the healer’s den - in which he poured his fears out to his sister Evelyn. He… he didn’t think he could make it to then. Growing old in Ice Empire was the choice which his head told him to do, but his heart was going to wander off with those who were travelling beyond his reach. It was an emotional talk, in which Eve revealed she was planning to stay alongside most of their siblings. He wouldn’t see her again if he left. There was no situation where he wouldn’t be leaving someone behind.

On the departure day, his silver paws found themselves alongside his mother’s as he cried tears of goodbye to those remaining. A small leather bag gently held a collection of gems, rocks and spotty the shell; ready for the journey. He couldn’t put into words why he had decided to leave. Perhaps the answer could be found between a morbid fear and grief over loneliness. Those who stayed… they were better than him. His eyes rested on his siblings, and then specifically Evelyn with Susan beside. He hoped if anyone could understand these indescribable emotions, she would.
