Description

Made a new ref for Clement because I didn't like the art of my previous ref that much, so of course, I elaborated on it too.

Bio:

Full name: Clement Miasma

Gender: cis male

Personality:
Clement is a rather sweet man who enjoys to educate others and is passionate about making sure people are well. He's a very calming person who will reach out to help others. He cares about his patients and the well being of others above everyone else, and despises medical professionals who are only in the profession for the money, or preform necessary or harmful treatments. Though he's well-mannered, he will quickly speak out against things he considers wrong, namely rudeness, disrespect, and unethical practices. He enjoys soft, cute things such as stuffed animals, because finds them comforting to both himself and his patients. He gets attached to people quickly, and is prone to having lots of crushes. Clement does not know what species he is or who his father is because his father erased all memories of him from Clement's mind in order to protect him from the dream plague, and to hide the fact that he was one of the people who created the dream plague. Clement has since figured that his father left before he was born.

History:

Dr. Miasma was brought up in Salem, Massachusetts, and witnessed the effects of the Salem Witch Trials as a child, and lost his mother in the trials. After the trials, many innocent mythical creatures who had lost someone, as well as others who were simply angry began to secretly plan how to punish humans for executing innocent people on the assumption of practicing witchcraft. Roughly ten years later, the Dream Plague was concocted, a magical spell disguised as a disease due to it's extremely contagious nature. The infection was weak at first, only able to effect humans, though the effects of the sickness were severe ― it paralyzes and sends the victim into an unending nightmare that is so severe that it's stress alone can lower the immune system, leaving the victim susceptible to illness, and can even kill due to the sheer amount of stress during the nightmare. In extreme cases, the victim can starve to death, being unable to wake up to eat. The disease is extremely contagious and fatal due to its magical properties. It can be cured by going into the mind of the victim and providing medicine and therapy to the patient to fend off the nightmares until they are strong enough to take control of it themselves. Survivors suffer from hallucinations, brain damage, and paralysis, and have described the nightmares as "an endless torture consisting often of seeing their loved ones die horrifically, and then dying the same way themselves."

The infection later went out of control, growing much stronger than originally planned, often killing human victims within three days, and mythical victims within five. The epidemic continued for many years, as doctors unsuccessfully tried to combat it. As Clement grew into his young adult years, he began to study medicine, hoping to end the suffering and death that had been around him almost his entire life. In his early 20's Clement joined a union of plague doctors who had committed their lives to stopping the dream plague called the Dream Plague Prevention Union, or DPPU, after noticing that the majority of doctors of the time were so unsuccessful at curing the disease, and in fact, often made it worse. Some doctors had only become doctors for money as well, and practiced uninformed, dangerous, and sometimes even malicious "cures" on their patients. As a result, gaining entrance into the DPPU was difficult, as they only accepted members who were proven to be practitioners working for the greater good, and had very strict rules that must be followed in order to keep one's membership, such as no smoking, alcohol, or other substances that could harm the body of either the doctor or patient, members can only marry within the organization, and visits with patients, examinations, and medical procedures must be monitored and recorded by another doctor, and doctors must always carry some form of identification of their occupation and membership to the DPPU. Most doctors simply wore their uniforms everywhere, and only took them off in the privacy of their own homes. This was to ensure that the doctor was truly committed to defeating the illness, and held accountable for any actions against the union's rules. Clement eagerly accepted his new life as a member of the DPPU, and by the early 1800's, the union's research had wielded new, revolutionary ways to combat the illness, though they still had not found a cure. by the 1850's, advancements in mental health treatments finally yielded a cure, as the link between the illness and mental health was discovered. Having found the cure in the form of dream walking therapy, the survival rate rose from only 5% to an astonishing 50%. Still, the union continued it's research, hoping to completely eradicate the dream plague. Within 7 years, the illness had become much more difficult to contract, allowing the population to flourish once again, after decimating over 60% of the population. In the 1950's, the use of antidepressants helped to further combat the illness, raising the survival rate to 80%.

By this point, the plague was so rare that many doctors specializing in dream plague research began to search for other work, including Clement, who became a professor at the University of Pittsburgh, teaching magic based classes that study alchemy, dream walking, and medicine, Meanwhile, the DPPU opened it's admissions to not only dream plague doctors, but to all types of magic based medical practitioners, and was renamed the North American Magical Doctor's Association, and rewrote some of their rules, allowing doctors to smoke, drink, and marry outside the union.

Becoming a dream plague doctor specifically requires a very specific set of abilities and skills, such as the ability to use magic, dream walk, knowledge of medicine, and psychology. Most modern dream plague doctors have traded their traditional masks and cloaks, inspired by the clothing of the doctors of the bubonic plague, for more modern clothing, however, Clement keeps the older clothing in order to preserve tradition. Dream plague doctors often wear bright or calming colors in order to calm their patients, as a calm patient vs a stressed one could mean the difference between life and death.

More about the dream plague

Physical Appearance:
Clement has a lanky build and stands at 6"4'
Clement is such a devout member of the NAMDA that he still follows the rules of the organization from it's time as the DPPU, refusing to take off his mask in public

Cane:
Clement has had many variations of his cane, the first few made of glass, all but one have been shattered, and the final two made of plastic. The cane allows Clement to administer medicine and take blood samples while staying at a distance from the patient. These canes are standard for dream plague doctors.

Other info/trivia:
Clement gets lost in his own thoughts easily. Tapping his shoulder gently usually gets his attention.
He's so used to wearing his uniform all the time, that the thought of showing his face or skin embarrasses him.
Would love to be in a relationship, but refuses to pursue one because he's too dedicated to his work
Clement's body language is very exaggerated to make up for not showing his face
Tends to absentmindedly twirl his cane, which is why the vast majority of them have broken
Refuses to eat in public because he doesn't want to take off his mask
Likes to sing in private, but isn't exactly good at it
Super cuddly ― can often be found snuggling a stuffed animal
clement has autism
Clement changed his last name from Teague to Miasma, after the Miasma theory began to be applied to the dream plague. He changed his name in order to show devotion to his career, and to distance himself from his father, Sinclair Teague, who helped create the dream plague.
