Description
Similarities Between Aperture Science and Combine Technology[SPOILER WARNING]
...from Half-Life 2, (and Episodes 1 & 2)
1. Combine turrets and Aperture turrets have similar features:
detection tone, visual cone, muzzle flash, fire rate, shot damage, tripod legs, panic shutdown collapse
(Combine turrets are also emblazoned with the circular City 17 logo as are Aperture turrets with the Aperture logo)
2. Combine Smart Barrier and Aperture Science Panel are both dynamic mechanical segmented walls
3. Combine Force Field and Aperture Science Material Emancipation Grill allow specific objects to pass
(Combine field limits personal passage, while Aperature grill limits certain objects)
4. Combine Field Bridge and Aperture Science Hard Light Bridge are identical platforms
(Essentially a horizontal version of the Combine force field)
5. Combine Power Generator Force Field and Aperture Science Excursion Funnel are scale versions of the same device.
Combine funnel small due to power source of one energy pellet, Aperture has current from entire complex.
(Both are force fields that isolate objects in a localized funnel to slowly propel within the field.)
6. Combine Energy Ball and Aperture Science High Energy Pellet look, move, and bounce identically
(Do not appear in Portal 2; perhaps confiscated from the Aperture facility?)
7. Combine Energy Ball-powered socket generator and Aperture Science Energy Pellet catcher have similar functions
(Again, none in Portal 2, as though removed or maybe repurposed?)
8. Half-Life 2 Gravity Gun (Zero Point Energy Field Manipulator) and Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device look alike
(Gravity gun becomes stronger inside Combine citadel confiscation field, and is a recognized technology?)
(Overwatch announces "Security alert: Illegal counter-resonant singularity device detected.")
9. Combine Overwatch and Aperture Science GLaDOS have an identical programmed voice.
(As though the Combine adapted an artificial construct to monitor subjects and relay orders)
10. Combine can copy consciousness and imprint into a host body, Aperture Science can interface human/machine
(Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System containing Caroline, being a prime example)
11. Combine Elite Soldiers and Aperature Science Turrets share a common theme:
central red ocular lens, overall white armor, black lower feet, and fire the same unlimited munitions
(Both are tasked with protecting the core of vast vertical complexes, Citadel and Aperture Science)
12. Combine Citadel Roof Access and Aperture Science Elevator Exit are both deep vertical structures with cavernous interiors
(Both have elevator systems that send passengers from the lower depths to an automatic topside door)
...from Half-Life: Alyx
13. Combine Vault Tractor Beam and GLaDOS Self-Destruct Sequence function in identical fashion
(Both negate gravity and levitate debris, produce large emissions of light, and disarm individuals therein)
14. Combine Vault Cell (Metal Frame Icosahedron) and Aperture Science Enrichment Spheres (Giant Metal Polyhedrons)
(Both reinforced symmetrical structures housing a controlled environment to contain isolated subjects)
(Combine Vault is powered by green energy: sapped from vortigaunts, or perhaps GREEN energy pellets?)
Conclusion:
The Combine most likely encountered and adopted Aperture Science technology to suit their own purposes. However, their reliance on the adopted technology made them susceptible to the same weaknesses inherent within the original designs. Therefore, the Combine could be infiltrated and destroyed just as easily as Aperture Science.
Exploitation theory:
Combine arrives on Earth after Nihilanth demise creates multiple portal storms
Combine reaches Black Mesa by connection through resonance cascade portal to Xen (Half Life)
Combine begins hostile takeover of Earth, and GLaDOS notices external changes
Combine learns of Aperture Science from documents at Black Mesa (both were rival contractors)
Combine prioritizes Aperture as target, GLaDOS realizes compromised position (Portal 1)
GLaDOS:
"Are you trying to escape? Things have changed since the last time you left the building. What's going on out there will make you wish you were back in here. I have an infinite capacity for knowledge, and even I'm not sure what's going on outside. All I know is I'm the only thing standing between us and them. Well, I was. Unless you have a plan for building some supercomputer parts in a big hurry, this place isn't going to be safe much longer."
Combine arrives at a damaged and destroyed Aperture facility (after Portal 1)
Combine integrates Aperture technologies into world domination plan
Combine proliferates Aperture equipment throughout expanding global theatre
Combine finally incorporates GLaDOS into surveillance network as Overwatch
Combine abandons Aperture facilities after exploiting available resources
Combine citadel and internal defenses constructed similar to Aperture Science (Half Life Alyx)
Combine dependence grows on practical dictatorship over theoretical development
Combine falls into stagnation, allowing G-man to instigate Freeman revolt (Half Life 2)
Combine unaware of GLaDOS going online and shutting down intermittently at Aperture (Portal 2)
Wheatley:
"Do you know who ended up purging her, ended up taking her down in the end? You're not going to believe this; a human. I know, I know. I wouldn't have believed it either. Apparently this human escaped, and nobody's seen him since. Then there was a sort of long chunk of time where absolutely nothing happened and then there's us escaping now."
Additional note: GLaDOS returns in Portal 2 as a rebuilt and abandoned version of her former self.
This would indicate a partial reconstruction in order to operate or exploit Aperture systems.
