The Defiant-class has always fascinated me. I always felt that with some modifications, a cloaking device similar to the one used in the Pegasus test-bed in the ST:TNG, it would create a basis for the defense of the Federation from its many foes. Perhaps 500 to a 1000 ships would create a deterrent that could match all comers.
