Description
The Challenge: “Draw a picture of your character at age 5. Include any objects (weapons, toys, parents) that you feel are necessary.”…A nice, easy, and above all, simple, challenge. The only problem was, I immediately realized that a certain critical event, namely Kyuubi’s attack, would have occurred in Konoha during my character’s fifth year (which was completely coincidental, by the way. I’d decided on her age long before I joined Ninja Society…). Fool that I am, I just had to try and draw it…
Pulling this picture together involved a crash course on drawing running figures, weeks of fighting with my dismal perspective skills, and days of failed attempts and half-starts. The end result isn’t perfect, by any means, but I am satisified that I have executed the original idea to the best of my current ability.
The drawings themselves are done with 100% traditional materials; ink marker, pigment liner, and parchement paper. The actual image is a digital composite of four different traditional drawings…without the ‘undo’ button, I was too chicken to place all of my eggs in one basket, so I drew this in sections.
Bottom right:
Right: Gekko Hayate’s father, shouting for someone offside to hurry up.
Center: Hagetaka Kiku (Maiden Name Gekko Kiku) and two-year-old son Aoi. Holding her hand is her daughter, five-year-old Hagetaka Miyoko, one of my main characters and the character for which this picture was made. Also of note is the Aivary (sp?) (the round building in the background) with the Hagetaka Family Crest partially showing.
Center, background: Fifteen-year-old Hatake Kakashi races out in front of his Sensei. (I realized, after I inked it, that I had forgotten to add his signature scarecrow pants…oh well…
Left: The charred gash on his face already forming into his trademark scar, twenty-year-old Raido Namiashi forcibly carries twelve-year-old Umino Iruka away from the battle…and from his parents. Anyone who is familiar with the Naruto storyline should know the rest of the story behind this.
Bottom left: 6-year-old Hana Inuzuka flees the sceen.
I tied the four together in Photoshop, added the character shadows, supplimented the more delicate shading on the buildings that the scanner had mangled, and added the dark sky. Then I did a final clean-up and created the layout in PSP.
Disclaimer: I don't own any of the Naruto Characters, or any part of the Naruto world. The creation rights belong to Kishimoto Masashi, and the publishing rights belong to...well, not me, anyway.

Nope, just a scene from my head... I assume, though, that any able-bodied ninja from the Leaf would have been fighting for their village, including Hayate's dad. Hayate would have been 11 at the time, so his dad would have been in his prime...

Yeah, it'll be interesting to see how closely they stick to the post-time-skip storyline... But the fillers are finally ending!

For a composite piece, it rates abou average kid.
For the work that went in, and the skills you've gained since I last saw you attempt anything like this... It's in the high 80's low 90's out of.... well out of 50.
I'm incredibly impressed with this. Unfortunately you've left a little too much cheek-bone and chin length on Miyoko, she looks like a boy unfortunately, and the pose, while good, lacks the free movement that it would have if she was been dragged along by the hand by her mother like that.
Other than that, for sheer cameos alone you've done remarkably well, and for a dramatic piece there's not much you could have come up with that would top it. Digitally gone over this could be more than a little fantastic in terms of lighting and effects, but that's not on the tiles now, really.
A solid effort with a few unfortunate errors, and it doesn't detract from the world you've set it in. Well done ^^

Thank you! Hmm, I see what you mean about Miyoko...I'll work on that for next time.

you have to work more on the people.. they have misdrawn hands while looks like only a scribble. one of the character that you drew is at the wrong angle. rely more on lines and screentones to convey the light rather than adding it in digitally. pay attention to the moon and its effects.. if possible, use screentones for people's clothes.. it ll look neater that way.
you have the techniques right but overlooked a lot of flaws.. still needs more work but its a good attempt.. ^ ^
