-“llo? Oh, hi! I haven’t heard from you since… what? Ok, I know I uses that joke every time. Well, you’re my publisher! It’d get boring if I didn’t at least TRY to lighten the mood of our phone calls. I me- Oh, the new article! Well, hear me out on this one before you say anything. I’m thinking a basic profile on the history of… Godzilla.”
“I TOLD you to hear me out! Look, I know how some people think when it comes the ‘G word.’ But there are also people who want to hear. Besides, he DID come to Seattle during that big international crisis a few years ago! And don’t get me started on New York. People around here do care about the monster thing. And those who don’t, well… I’ll make it my job to sway them.”
“So, what do you think? Yes. Yes. Ok, I’ll have it done by day after tomorrow. You will NOT regret this.”

“Ok, now to get started. I guess I should start with a little history lesson. Something like…”
Godzilla. That word alone has a monster of accompanying emotions. To some, it is admiration and respect. To some, it is seething hatred. But to most, it is fear.
It began with the end of World War II. The world had woken up for the first time in many years, but, in many places, there was still a never ending nightmare.
“(hm, I outdid myself there just now with the ‘nightmare’ thing. Let’s keep this up.)”
Japan was such a place. It had been almost ten years, but it was fresh in many people’s minds. After all, how do you recover, when you know that only you have felt the atomic sting? Nevertheless they rebuilt. Things were beginning to fall back into place.
But, things always get worse before they get better. It was an unheard of headline, ‘Odo island left in shambles.’ Survivors claim that the island was destroyed by a decidedly UN-natural disaster. They claimed it was the work of a dark god of their old culture. The demon GOJIRA. And, worst of all, it was headed for mainland Japan.
And then it came. Dark clouds fell over The Land of the Rising Sun as an unspeakable terror arose from the depths. It made its way inland, leaving nothing unbroken. It was a massive, malevolent creature with full intent to destroy. And destroy it did.
The beast simply couldn’t be stopped. The military only served to annoy the creature. Massive power lines only provided an itch to his unbreakable hide. Even mountains fell before the creature! It seemed that the nightmare… was just getting worse.
Tokyo was half gone. Towns that once supported thousands were so badly razed, they had to simply be abandoned. The air was thick with radiation and the smell of decay. And, the worst part is that this was a complete rout. The creature hadn’t so much suffered a scratch. Then the climax of the nightmare arrived when the beast was destroyed.
It is not exactly known just what finally destroyed the creature. Sources are fuzzy and the information barely even-

FROM THE NOTES OF ERIC GOLDWIN
Gojira is something we as man created, and thus he is a curse-like reminder to humanity of our great carelessness with the power of God. But, at the same time, there is something more to him, more behind those fiery eyes that have burned our world to the ground over and over again. The screams, the lives lost, all are as nothing before this monster that holds so little value for us. And the worst part is, even though I still remember that first dreadful time as a child, I cannot hate him anymore. Nor can I love him. . . all I can show. . . is. . .reverance. Oh how cosmically ironic. . .
-Taizo Tachibana, JSDF Naval Commander
It's hard to say in this modern age of information that you have never encountered the name of Godzilla. After all, the very world as we know it began with his arrival into our lives. As such, there is so much study on the monster called king that you will get a different theory for each and every one you ask. In an attempt to give a more unbiased report on the creature, I will be taking what many different people have in common in their stories and including them below. I hope you find this informative.
Now, the Gojira that first appeared in Tokyo in 1954 was by no means the only one of his kind, that much is obvious. As for where these giant lizards came from, and more importantly how in the world they could have been hiding from us as long as they did, you had best look into the notes left behind by the Futurians who invaded in the late twentieth century. Apparently, a group of them had, prior to their invasion attempt, had set up a camp in the Aleutian islands in the early Twentieth century in order to study Godzilla's origin. How they got the intel on the location is still a mystery, but nonetheless what is written is a rather surprising tale.
Apparently, 'Godzilla' as he is internationally known, was born at the turn of the twentieth century in a small clutch of two eggs. The species, dubbed Gojirasaurus Orientalis, is believed to be a Spinosaurid relative that had survived the extinction, lived in remote isolation, surviving by semiaquatic hunting and scavenging on the local fauna. The first, now labeled under 'Gojira' was apparently the younger of two males, and was, according to the journal, a member of perhaps the last breeding pair of the entire species. It is still a mystery as to what caused the species decline, as it seems unlikely that man played any role, as the model usually goes. One theory is that the younger males of the species were dying faster than breeding due to an increasing number of female eggs, perhaps due to global temperature changes. Nonetheless, the number was in steep decline.
There is also an account of a Japanese battalion encountered a Godzillasaur during their Marshall island occupation during WWII. Exaggerated accounts of 'giant monsters' were regarded as 'old soldier tales' and often disregarded, though they do show that the beasts were territorial and protective over young. Using this and comparing the encounter with Futurian intel, it can be assumed that the creatures mated for life, staying together and watching over their eggs alternately.
However, this information does not answer where the beasts got their newfound stature and indestructibility. To find that, you need to know first off of the Aleutian atomic bomb tests America held. The records show that these tests took place after Gojira first appeared, though classified GDF intel reveals a premature bomb that was set off in the late 1940's by an asteroid from space. Though accounts are hazy, many lives were lost, and even more horrible to mention, the explosion created almost uncannily perfect conditions for a 'bad blast,' a GDF coined for when a nuclear incident created fallout with mutagenic properties far beyond the norm. Arctic trade winds carried the atomic fallout astonishing distances, mutating the fauna of the islands to astonishing heights. None so greatly in human minds as the Gojirasaurs, rapidly growing from 10 to 50 meters and finding themselves with a lot less room to cope with the neighbors.
The islands rapidly became a virtual kaiju warzone, beast clashing with beast, though only a few creatures made it out of there alive, and even fewer in one piece. Gojira even lost the life of his mate to a larger competing predator called 'The Stranger' by the Futurians, leaving him separated from all of his kind. This led him out of his place of birth in pursuit of a new home, leading him on a famous rampage across Japan that you could find information on anywhere.
There is little information on the behavior of Gojira due to his rather short record for human interaction, though it is theorized that his supposed heartless aggression was simply a result of depression for the loss of his mate and family. The Futurian accounts show that before the death of his mate, Gojira was an almost noble warrior, working alongside kaiju in and out of his species to defeat opponents. Perhaps he would have proved to be a GUARDIAN to mankind had things turned out differently, though at this point the beast casts a dark shadow over the history of man. Mostly because. . . of the fact that he was only the beginning.

Note:Congrats on reading to this point, to the patient ones of you. Now, I can imagine your confusion. 'Isn't Go G finished? Why are you going through it again? Are you doing all of it? and the usual etc.' Well, the answers to that are kinda no, because I as an artist will never be satisfied, and yes.
If you want to see my old entry artwork, look in scraps for the retro goodness. I'll get a journal up to better explain some details after a while, but expect a few differences and details the last takes didn't have much on. Nonetheless, I look forward to continuing them.

shouldn't godzilla be a mysterious dinosaur species of the theropod dinosaur tree

He could very well, but I went with the Heisei explanation of the Godzillasaur, one of the last living types of dinosaur. Technically it's a theropod, just with a more upright posture.

well godzilla's design was based of the scienticicly correct data at the time becuase at the time a tyrannosaurus had an up right poster now it has a modern posture which is horizontal or something similar to that

His nostrils look a bit too big but otherwise a good take on him and much easier to see quality wise. Really like that little history segment too.

I overdid the shading a bit on the nostrils, and thanks. The history lesson was the hardest, yet most fun part to come up with, getting a distinct, yet organized voice in writing it was a fun little challenge.
Glad you like it overall.

wow dude thats awesome. he looks really great and very young though. he seems be not even a full adult yet. anyway he came out really awesome. the colors and the design are great. i also liked how you bulked him up. the chest looks strong, the legs are no longer sumo legs but powerful muscular fighter ones, and his tail looks really badass. but the part i love the most is he looks happy. its rare you say em smile. really awesome job dude

Thanks, and yeah, he does look a little young and happy. Well, he is the younger of the two Godzilla brothers in the beginning, so I suppose that thought did influence the design a bit.

I have to say, I'm not all that sure of the new design for this guyl.
Seems a little too close to the cartoon version of Godzilla, which just doesn't seem fitting for the beast that tore apart Japan for the first time.
I realize your going for a slightly less darker tone, but he doesn't look that threatening.
Though, all and all it is a grea picture and other then the cartoon vibe I have no real beef with it, the story is also very awesome.

Yeah, the HB vibe is definitely there, wasn't all that intentional either, but there is a reason I chose a slightly less threatening look. The original Gojira is in black and white, and was designed to look. . .well, scarier than the frog suits that would follow it. I wanted to give a bit of a 'what-if' vibe, maybe he's pissy for a reason, (a la loss and depression) instead of just being evil and destructive, or just 'confused' about himself being huge. After all, the next godzilla could be plenty heroic in his own right, and the two in Go G are brothers, so I thought a halfway look between savage and nice would be best, though I think he drifts a tad too far in the 'nice' direction. Nonetheless, I don't want to touch up on him at the moment.
Glad you still stick around despite disagreements in taste, and thanks.

He just comes off too cartoon-ish to be scary to me. Then again the HB Godzilla was an ugly sucker.
True I disagree on over all design, but the spines look pretty cool, the posture and leg design is huge and powerful, unlike the later Godzilla who is considered slightly slimmer and faster.
