Description
Name: OrthrusFactions: Echidna's Brood, Sernak's Army
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Rank: 3
Height: 20 meters (shoulder)
Length: 60 meters
Weight: 16000 tons
Powers:
-Intelligence: Orthrus is by no means a stupid monster. The two headed dog is more than capable of problem solving and strategizing, though at times the decision is met with self-opposition from his other head, which often arrives at its own conclusion.
-Mad Dog: In the days of the war, Orthrus was given a strange power over pheromones, which when inhaled act as a powerful hallucinogen, creating mass panic in battle.
Venom: Orthrus possesses a wicked bite, with hemotoxic venom in both sets of jaws. This was mainly to make up for the lack of bite force in comparison to his much larger successor Cerberus.
Weaknesses:
-As the adage goes: Orthrus is very stubborn towards getting his way, and rarely adapts to combat with other kaiju. To be blunt, he's an old dog, and he doesn't like new tricks.
-Lightweight: As Orthrus was created before the war began, he was not built for combat, rather instead for herding. The smaller canid is easily tossed around by larger foes. Inorganic creatures are practically the bane of his existence.
-Bum Head: After battling Dedun, one of the two heads of Orthrus is slightly less composed and controlled than the other due to prolonged exposure to the lion's own chemical assault. Often this head is the one that initiates combat, with the other head trying to hold the other back, though it is never long before the haze of battle takes them both.
Personality:
Ancient: To describe him, Orthrus was something of a Kyuzo. he was short on words, and often did what was needed silently, a cold stare often the only response he would warrant.
Modern:Silent and cunning, often lying in wait for prey to come too close. He prefers letting his opponents be their own undoing, often causing fits of madness through pheromones before moving in for the silent kill.
When not in combat, the canid prefers to keep to himself, the Atlantean cattle pastures (and today, the farmlands of the Great Plains) are his place of sojourn.
History: In the heyday of the Atlantean empire, Orthrus, the third child of Typhon and Echidna, was born to keep watch over the super sized mutated cattle used to keep the kaiju fed. He did his job quietly, and had no problems being on his own. He was the first of the children to not be overly serpentine in appearance, so he felt little attachment to them. Ladon was much like himself, at least how he saw it, but that didn't make the two compatible, in fact it was quite the opposite. Hydra, though she liked the fact that she was no longer the youngest, found friendly conversation lacking in the canid. She once tried to get close to him while he was napping in his fields, but her massive serpentine form was too imposing and sent the cattle into a rush. That was the last time she tried to approach him for fear of losing her new heads that had grown in.
But then, the war came. Like many of the children, Orthrus found himself out of his hamlet of peace and thrust against the stone giants of Hyberborea, where he proved too small and powerless to do much of anything to them. That didn't mean that he never tried, but in the end he was gravely wounded and brought home. Echidna, seeing her child wounded, gave him new life by giving him traits of another of her children, Hydra, namely venom, a rattled snake tail, and a second head. Even with this, though, he still lacked power, so his gene's were then taken and weaponized into his younger brother Cerberus. Orthrus was then placed on guard duty in Atlantis (Hyperborea frequently invaded from underwater) and saw much more usefulness taking on the human soldiers and stonesmiths, those who controlled their weapons and repaired their golems. A newfound ability utilized by the dog was the power to render humans and other monsters at times mad by psychotropic pheromones, which would completely incapacitate Hyperborean groundtroops, though it proved useless against the golems.
It was during this time he came across the other of the children of Echidna and Typhon. Cerberus, a guard much like himself, for some reason was always following his silent caustic older brother around, often forsaking his own post. It was this that would lead to his subsequent guard post at Tartarus prison after Ethon was reassigned. Speaking of Ethon, he found Orthrus an unsettling individual, though why was a bit confusing to the rather simple avian. To the eagle, Orthrus was his big brother, but unlike his other older sibling he knew, the patriotic, idealistic Hydra that was off fighting the giants on the frontlines, Orthrus was quiet, and unsettling. The eagle did not fear him, the two were about the same size, but he never once turned his back to the dog for fear he'd get bitten.
Chi, Mae, and Ra were about the most annoying things he could have never hoped to meet. The lion was all bluster, the goat too much like Hydra for his tastes, and Ra was just. . .Ra. He never enjoyed sharing the field with the trio, their overdone exploits making the battles seem to drag on longer than necessary. He did not realize it, but the war was starting to change him. What was a peaceable guard was now an embittered, cold creature that cared nothing for his home for turning him into what he was. In his heart, he just wished to turn a blind set of eyes and slip away into silence, but the war just would not stop keeping him in place.
When C'thun began to stir, long after the war began, Orthrus was one of the first to sense it but proved powerless in stopping the chaos, namely because his abilities helped spread it even farther. He was locked away by the Atlanteans in the madness and stayed in hypersleep for a long, long time, his bitterness beginning to take a real, tangible shape. Because of this, he was quickly forgotten in the stormclouds of foreshadowed doom at the hands of their own creation. . .
------------Modern Age-----------------------
When he awoke, in the modern age of monsters, Typhoon had long destroyed their home, but it mattered little to the silent two headed beast. He spotted a team of researchers, hoping to find more secrets after encountering Hydra weeks before, and slowly began to spread the seeds of madness from afar. The team slowly began to kill each other with whatever means they could, old weapons, research tools, even their bare hands, until Orthrus had had enough and went inland, hoping to find more satisfaction.
Orthrus proved a surprise to the people of America, to say the least. He moved inland immediately, the people in his path creating a bloody swathe from his powers. Eventually this attracted the attention of the higher ups, who began to mobilize Unum, who they believed was the best possible weapon to attack the beast.
Dr. Lerna was perhaps the most surprised of all. After encountering Hydra, which she thought was an interesting coincidence at best, Orthrus' appearance got her thinking. 'Just how many monsters that just so happen to resemble Greek monsters are there?' Apparently, something similar sparked inside of Hydra, who slithered east without hesitation, the more curious kaiju such as Tyrantis and Spartacus.
Before the dog could reach the stomping grounds of his sibling, though, he met heavy opposition outside of St. Louis from a beast he did not expect, the lion Dedun. He paid the cat little heed, but when he felt his own head clouding from the lion's bristling anger, he knew this beast was no ally, and that he was a beast that could not be underestimated. Dedun's greater size proved an effective weapon against the dog as the two slowly drove each other berserk, but at the same time it meant he had more spots to be bitten by the canid and eventually suffer heavy damage from the venom. The lion collapsed on the city outskirts, the people dismayed that the lion was defeated so soon by the much smaller dog. Foaming out of one mouth, Orthrus began to move into the city, this time ready to rampage about like the mad dog he was becoming, and even more frightening, embracing.
Then Unum arrived. The dog launched himself at the technorganic scorpion, but found it to be unaffected by his own powers, and was subsequently sent flying by a launched rocket pincer. The battle was surprisingly short, the human controlled scorpion defeated the dual dog and dumping him in a remote, newly fenced section of the Great Plains, a secret government project called 'Project Monster Range.'
Orthrus took to the quiet plains half well, one of his heads constantly moving to nip at the fences.
This was quickly shattered, yet again, by the arrival of Hydra.
It was a simple, cloudless morning when she arrived at the fenced section, a massive metal wall that had been rigged to keep others out. The group stood in front of the gargantuan block, nearly as tall as Hydra was long, counting the massive barbed wire, when a loud noise broke out over the clearing, a noise that made Tyrantis nearly roll his eyes.
Tricerak, acting as though he was in the middle of the worst hangover there ever was, bellowed in the most recognizably pissed off tone possible. He charged without hesitation, the group moving out of his way at the last second, causing the dino monster to barrel straight through the wall, leaving him unconscious, and the wall breached.
Hydra looked to her red and green ally. "Hard headed indeed, my friend." she said with a note of humor. Ty's snort was half of resignation and the other half was of humor, but then he was called back to reality when Hydra slithered through the massive hole. "I know I smell something familiar here, but I'm not sure what. . . its as though it is a long forgotten fruit was found after weeks of searching, fermented and. . . rotten."
She quickly deduced the source, but she couldn't help but notice her other heads were all acting a little more short tempered then normal, nipping at each other and appearing intoxicated. Ty and Spartacus were not far behind, either, and before long she was the only one not trying to kill everything in sight. She swatted the two in the head with the blunt end of her tail, knocking them out. She had seen these effects before.
It was then that he appeared over a hillside. "Sister Hydra, my what an interesting surprise." She turned suddenly, both overjoyed and disappointed at the same time.
"Orthrus?"
"YES, I'M ORTHRUS, YOU SCALY WORM OF- Apologies, I've had no one to talk to for SO long. . . Afraid I've gotten a bit lost in the head. Well, one of them, anyway." His jowls opened to form a feral, toothy snarl/grin.
"You're alive!" Hydra exclaimed. Orthrus did not share her enthusiasm. "And? You came out here to tell something I've always known?"
"Have you seen any of the others? Chimaera, Ethon anyone?"
Though she was many times his size, always had been, Hydra backed away from the cold glare the dual headed dog gave her, she knew what he could do and was amazed he hadn't done so already. He hissed in a way that made the serpent's spine tingle.
"Why would you ask me that? Do you not think. . .at all?" The fur on the back of the hound was beginning to bristle.
"Why would I look for a world that did THIS TO ME!!!" He began to foam in his right mouth. Hydra backed away even more.
"Because of them, I had to sacrifice everything. AND FOR WHAAT!?!?" The field went silent, save for a small wind rustling the grass.
"Nothing. That's what. You'll find no happy reunion here, dear sister. Nor shall you find the others. With any luck, the madness killed them if the war didn't."
It was Hydra's turn to bristle.
"You dare say that about my, no, OUR MOTHER! Our Father was turned into a weapon, and he turned on us. Those of us that remained did battle alongside him, and we were imprisoned by Atlantis."
Orthrus turned one head her way, a little surprised his once naive sister had so much gall. Time had certainly changed her, but then again he couldn't really talk.
"I've no longing to find Atlantis, just the same as you. All I have now is my family, and. . ." she turned a head over to the now recovering Tyrantis and co. "My friends. Maybe if you had some to begin with, you wouldn't be in so sorry a state. Goodbye, my brother, though I hope not forever."
And with that, the group was gone.
Orthrus pondered his sisters words after a nap, more than a little satisfied that Atlantis got its just deserts at the hands of his own kin. But at the same time, he did not like the idea of a family reunion. Chi, Mae and Ra would no doubt be up to their grandstanding, and the very thought of Cerberus and the puppy eyes he made at him made him grimace. He didn't want company, but company always seemed to find him.
"Sorry, sis, but I'll take my chances with the silence." The wind blew again, and he sighed through his two noses. He could come to like this place.
Then Tricerak woke up.
Orthrus turned, not realizing the reptile was there until he heard a very, very angry snort. The hound turned slowly, cursing his luck at each moment's passing.
"Why can I never have what I want?" He asked himself, and proceeded to run out of the hole in the wall as fast as he could, Tricerak hot on his heels at a dead charge. Seems Orthrus would take part in the reunion after all. . .
----------------------------------------
Dedun watched the scene unfold from a distance, his fur bristling at the sight of the two headed dog chasing after the serpent, several hours behind. Whatever the snake had done, she had done a good job in getting that surly pooch to come around. He decided to keep an eye on dog long before, and he was hankering for adventure, so in the end he took off in pursuit. And thus the hunt for the legacy of Atlantis began.

EDIT: After all the development to be had for the Atlantean plot, I looked back and realized that my bio's on the matter could use some good beefing. Thus, I worked in angles I neglected before, mainly interaction between others.
I'm working on Sernak's and Perseus's soon, but probably not tonight. 'Till then.
Here we are with the Typhonchild Orthrus, the two headed dog of lore. I figured, what with Cerberus being the more famous of the two, that Orthrus would come first, but prove too weak to do combat with the massive Hyperborean armies. Now, he is one of the least loyal to Atlantis, but is one of the older children and is pretty intelligent, (not as much as the Sphinx though) but ultimately goes half mad.
I made him a rank 3 due to the chemical ability I gave him. I wanted Dedun to have an enemy that could turn his own strengths against him, so I decided this was a good chance. Plus, with Cerberus as a bigger little brother to him and making him a pre-war kaiju, making him Rank 3 seemed pretty natural. He doesn't need to fight all that much.]
That, and this gave me a chance to actually show Unum owning someone. He's been beaten by myself and others more than I thought. . .
Alright, more to come.

Nice additions to the story. Ethon and Orthus actually seem to be quite a like. Maybe that's why they don't like each other.

Very nice new additions to the plot here, although Spartacus Will power would probably have been a decent defense against Orthrus' pheromones (especially since it was able to counteract a venom), but that's unimportant.
Hmmm, this Kaiju "playground" sounds very interesting.

Very nice, you've guys have been busy while I was asleep. I like how you've managed to put in some texture there for his reptile parts. In general he functions quite well and the madness angle is very neat. I think he could use some more defined shading and values but that's neither here nor there.

Now, will this guy be part of Dark Hours?

Someone similar, yes. The reason I did Orthrus from mythology is that I have a demonic two headed dog planned that is very much based on the character. It'll be a she, and her name will be Shrot instead of Orthrus, but it'll be about the same character.

Very awesome. I love the way the snake and canine mix so well, and, for some reason, adore the addition of scales around the mouths.
The story is pretty cool, too-being the older but weaker brother, made for peace and only so effective for war, is a neat way to go with him.

Thanks much. I couldn't resist the idea of putting heat pits near the mouths instead of whiskers. Makes for an interesting image.

Nice. Perhaps snake features should be the theme of Echidna's spawn.

I had originally meant for us to wait and sorta settle on a collaborative story for these guys... but this actually works as a nice start to it, so I really can't complain. I think the discovery of Orthrus can fuel the search for other Atlantean monsters.
Design wise he looks pretty much how I think he should. Has the serpentine elements of Cerberus (and most of the other Echidna spawn), while looking quite distinct in his own way. He''s not the best fighter in the world, but that fits him just fine. Cerberus has quite the act to follow now. Excellent work!
