"You can't miss the daily cavalry trainings again, Cain, how often do you think I am supposed to tell you that?" Raphael gruffed at the trainee who plopped down into the wooden chair in front of his desk.
"I know, I know" Cain dully answers, his thoughts visibly trailing off. The air in the room was sticky and the light flooding through the windows dusty. "Then how are you going to explain yourself to me?" The older men sank his face into his palms, his elbows steadily resting on the old paper files that were spread over his desk. It was a chaos only Raphael knew how to keep track on, and Cain made a good job disturbing every so slightly arranged system in his files.
Cain dropped his gaze to his hands were he slided a neatly folded piece of paperwork across the desk. "I'm not asking for forgiveness, you need to hear me--"
"Mr. Loghain, please", Raphael cutting him off mid sentence, "This is not about personal favours. You should know the best that we have a good relationship running between us, but my hands are bound. And this is not the right place for kindness" The eyes of Cains Superior were looking hurting. Cain knew the boundaries of this arrangement, but he needs to warp the rules for his own righteusness.
The letters 'Military court' were printed with neat ink on the top of the paperwork in Cains hands. Raphael may not be his lieutenant, or general, or any other fancy term for boss, but being in charge of the personnel he's the first one to go to. In this case reports from the head of the regiment that settled on his grounds.
"What are you afraid of, then? That I'll destroy the neatly arranged rider formation? The first few times the lieutenant didn't even notice. I'm a good rider, Mr. Dres, I am good to go even without our daily trails." It wasn't long ago since Raphael commissioned the soldier to take the training of one of his most promising steeds in his personal hands. Yet he was still assigned to train together with his leasing cavalry horse together with the others. Not only he stayed away from such daily sessions, he went off to train with the biggest hope of Arryn Hall regarding the olympics, the stallion Concord. Which was practically theft from the government, since the stallion Concord is offical property of the millitary department of Arryn Hall. And the government does not take things slightley. Raphael should have known that news spread around fast, and so he shouldn't have wondered when the letter from the military court arrived.
"I'm calling on you, Mr. Loghain, this will be the last time, otherwise I need to bring in the big guns." There wasn't a single trace of a threat in Raphaels voice, but even Cain knew that he got away easy this time. "You be lucky if there won't be any consequences on this one."
"I appreciate it Mr. Dres, but I make my own luck."
Raphael offered Cain one last empathic gaze. "Dismissed. Oh, and Cain?" The young soldier looked up by the unfamiliar use of his first name, "If you want to train for the olympics the next time, I want you to meet me in the stables. I'm gonna show you what a real traing looks like."
With that, Cain nods with a hesitate rush of delight and arises from the wooden chair, and the toughts fly around in his head that maybe, just maybe, he made a new friend.
