The beginning...
aka how to start with pixel art
After I got a Daily Deviation for How to make a victorian house? I decided to make a tutorial series about pixel art. As always you have to start from the beginning and this is it, tutorial about how to start with pixel art. As some of you don't have a photoshop then I decided to make this tutorial about pixel art and MS Paint. I hope you enjoy it.
If you think that you didn't understand this tutorial fully then you can always send me a note and I will answer to you.

Pixel Art Tutorial Series is currently the most popular thing on my page. The idea behind this is to take suggestions from the community and try to make a tutorial out of these things, helping out fellow deviants along the way. You can also find my pixel art tutorials in groups like #TutorialsForYou , #TutorialsClub and #PixelCommunity .
Here is a list of tutorials in my Pixel Art Tutorial Series, tutorials which are underlined and bold are already ready tutorials that you can read, other tutorials without the underline are tutorials that will be posted in deviantART in near future.
You can also suggest new pixel art tutorial series by commenting on my profile page, on these tutorials or by sending me a note.
Enjoy!

I've always been interested in pixel art but never actually wanted to do any. But when I saw this tutorial I thought, "a cube? Fuck it! Why not?" And so I did it and now I'm interested in delving further into pixel art, so I thank you for that! Anyway, this tutorial was really simple and well explained! I now have my first cube pixel sitting proudly in my art folder, haha!

i feel extremely stupid and slow right now but...
how exactly do you make the first line?
sorry for my slowness...im new to this

vanmall In reply to chocolate-gurl [2011-04-07 09:37:55 +0000 UTC]
No problem. I guess you have MS paint, right?
So, when you have opened the program, then on the left side of your screen there is a little zoom in tool. Use it and zoom your image in as much as you can. Then take the line tool and draw a line like it is displayed on my tutorial.
I hope it helps. If not, then tell me and I'll try to explain it once more.

That's it? But then, how is it more zig-zagged? I was confused because you said two lines down and one up? That's why I was confused but now I just feel like an idiot for misunderstanding something so simple.
Sorry but I also have another question (hopefully its not as stupid). I didn't really understand the coloring part. Like how there are multiple shades of color and how to blend it to make it look more realistic.
Thank you so much in advance; you're extremely helpful and explain things great.

Maybe its actually my fault, because it wasn't written well. So you are not an idiot.
Basically you have a little bar of colors, right? Starting with black and ending with purple. If you double click on one of them then color palette opens up. Click "define custom colors" and you can select your own color. After its done you can see the color you selected on that color bar. For example if you double clicked on black and changed its color, then there should be blue now or whatever you took. Use this color to paint one side of your cube. After its done, double click on that color bar again and again "define custom color". On your right side there is a little strip with arrow on the right. (Same color you have goes from really light to really dark there.) Change it lighter or darker and paint your cube how ever you want. That way you can get shades of this same colors easily.
Its actually always about experiment. You can't have certain "rules" how to make something look nice. You have to always try and see what looks best.

no, its not your fault; it's written fine
oh, I think I actually understand it now. Now that you explained it, it seems much more simpler.
Thanks so much for helping me! I really appreciate it!
