This is exactly how you do it. There are some special characters that you can use with copy-paste, there's loads of them if you google it. And people make stuff with them.

Great tutorial, but one thing bothers me. There doesn't seem to be a light source, all of the sides are the same color, and each side should have a different shade. Because of this the text doesn't quite look 3D, or maybe I'm just colorblind

Take what ever texture you like, wood should work fine.
