Description For someone who likes mecha as much as I do, I spend a disappointing amount of time watching Mecha titles and even less actually drawing them (I'm not sure my Mechan War Patrol really counts...). I mean, I'm woefully behind on even the popular series like Gundam and Macross.

At least I get my Transformers fix.

Gaiking was the first real mecha anime that I really got to like, being introduced to the series by the movie edit in the Force Five series. When I learned that the series was remade, I just had to watch it. And what's more, actually draw Gaiking itself.

I kept checking back on the anime for the details, but I added some more "real world" elements in terms of articulation. The detail on the hands in particular was inspired by The Last Stand of the Wreckers, particularly the art by Nick Roche. The hips were something I thought up involving something like a combination swivel and ball-joint to emulate the "superhero trunks" look of classic giant robots.

It wasn't that recent, but the remake's title translates pretty much to Gaiking: The Legend of Daiku Maryu. Other than sporting more modern animation, primary changes include a much younger pilot for Gaiking, a revamped Daiku Maryu crew, and the addition of two other Maryu with their own respective super robots.

It's definitely worth checking out if you get the chance!

I seem to be getting a knack for the classic robots lately!

Thank you! I tried really hard to do justice to one of my favorite robots, and I'm glad people are liking it!

Like I mentioned, the hand design was inspired by Nick Roche's work on the Transformers comics, where he used some really feasible articulation for the wrists and fingers. My hands are largely similar, since I wanted this classic mech to have a somewhat more modernized look.

And I've been reading Wreckers too much...

So I'm happy you didn't draw Megan Fox as well

Even if I wanted to draw her character, I still wouldn't aim for a resemblance!

But I hope you would'nt have the idea to draw her anyway
