Description This is the entry that I submitted to for the Mega Man Tribute book.

In case anyone out there has not seen the full list of winners, you can check out Udon's blog where they posted the announcement.

I worked pretty hard on this piece, and I honestly thought that I had a good shot of being included. I guess it goes to show that I still have far to go. But disappointment aside, I still learned quite a bit while working on this piece, and I hope that I can continue to improve.

So while it's not going to "ever" be seen in print, here it is in its full-colored glory. If you take a look at the Mega Man 3 Boss pic I posted before, you should notice that I actually used a similar layout for the bosses. That was quite unintentional, but I ran with it once I noticed. The first piece could then be seen as the confrontation scene, and this is the beginning of the full fight!

Pencils and inks on A4 Vellum Board, colors on Photoshop CS3 with a Genius G-Pen 450.

I think this is great. You know, I'm collecting rejected entries to make a downloable fan artbook, if you are interested in join us you can see more details in my journal: [link] It would be nice if you join us with your entry

I appreciate the invitation! I was actually talking about this with , which you can see here in the comments. I'm unsure due to the whole distribution/reproduction rights issue mentioned in the Tribute book's website, but I did mention that I'd rather work on a completely new piece instead, if you'd like.

Cool! Well, I just know that the reproduction right thing is just for the winning entries. Anyway, you can do a new piece for this fanbook, that would be totally awesome

Tell me when you finish your new piece to include it into the book!

This one is awesome and I wish it had been included in the book! Top man was so useless in Mega Man 3 though... I dunno why he was ever a boss. lol But Top Spin was pretty cool except the fact that the weapon energy would just shoot down to zero in 1 or 2 shots if you weren't careful about using it. I think they should have given Mega Man his Top Shot weapon instead of Top Spin. lol

Variable-Edge In reply to XClark [2011-04-29 22:17:36 +0000 UTC]

I agree that the Top Spin was not the best weapon in the entire MM3 arsenal, maybe even the entire series (not that I was able to play all of them, mind you)! If the mechanics were a bit more consistent, perhaps it would have been better. But as for Top Man as a character, I always liked him for some weird reason. Maybe it was his design?

I mean, it allowed me to overlook the fact that the only Top related things in his stage were those spinning platforms you hop on in the latter portion, and a few robots that dispensed tops.

XClark In reply to Variable-Edge [2011-04-30 05:19:56 +0000 UTC]

Heh yeah his stage is definitely one of my favorites. It had the right amount of challenge and was still easy. I loved the giant cats too!

anyways looks very cool.

Variable-Edge In reply to MegaTuga [2011-04-29 22:20:33 +0000 UTC]

That's what makes Snake Man cool!

In my version though, his real face is that of the snake, so the "robot face" in the mouth is more like a decoy appearance. That's why you don't see the robot's eyes, and the snake's eyes are the ones that glow.

It just adds a layer of creepy!

MegaTuga In reply to Variable-Edge [2011-04-30 19:35:03 +0000 UTC]

Even more layers?

And I just noticed now but.. there's a shadow in Megaman's back which.. erm.. it's obvious, unless I am imagining this... after all it has a scarf XD

Variable-Edge In reply to MegaTuga [2011-05-01 02:42:04 +0000 UTC]

You're actually the first to mention it, though I hope others were able to notice that little cameo.

It also plays into the story, when you think about it-- is someone about to jump in from behind, or could it be an unknown ally?

Since everyone pretty much knows the answer to that one, I don't really need to say more on that matter, do I?

No, I think you don't. That is in fact a nice touch. May not look like much but it is a good touch.

Variable-Edge In reply to Lukael-Art [2011-04-22 00:53:54 +0000 UTC]

Well, if there's one thing I learned, it's that no matter how good I get, there will always be someone better than me, as much as I am better than someone else. It's just the way things are. *shrug* So I try not to get too hung up on it. Sometimes, these things are a matter of the judge's tastes.

Best thing to do is to just keep improving the best I can in my own way, and hopefully impress the right people. For now, knowing that there are people who like my work is reward enough!

Hey if you want a second shot, Soul-Rokkuman is putting together an art book for the "rejected by UDON" tributes in honor of those who didn't make it into UDON's book. Visit her page on deviant art for links to her journal.

Variable-Edge In reply to XClark [2011-04-29 23:12:37 +0000 UTC]

That sounds interesting, but since the Terms of the contest stated that submitted artwork immediately becomes Capcom's property, I don't think collecting the rejected pieces would be possible, in a legal sense.

It's under the Reproduction/Usage Rights found on the Udon site here: [link] . Udon at least allows us to post our rejected pieces here on dA, so long as we do clarify that it was a submitted piece and that it was rejected.

That said, there IS mention on the journal you mentioned saying that they'd be interested in collecting works that haven't been submitted to Udon's contest. If I have the time, I may come up with a new piece for that.

Well, specifically stated, it says all "Winning" entries become property of Capcom. Honestly, you've got quite a talent anyway, I'm sure a new piece would be something you could do and I'm sure you'll end up making it better.

Variable-Edge In reply to XClark [2011-04-30 08:18:34 +0000 UTC]

It's the part that says "by submitting, you relinquish all reproduction rights to the image" that I'm more concerned with.

But there are a number of ideas I can go with for a new piece, and of course, I do have that other character concept that involved all of these guys as well.

Ahah yeah of course. You mustn't strive to be the best, you gotta strive to be the best you can be But hey you're right it depends on the judges, and maybe they had limited spots for each series or something.

Thank you! It's undoubtedly my favorite of the classic series, though 2 has more memorable bosses.

But the ones in 2 just didn't have the "oomph" that inspired me to do this: [link] !
