Honestly, I felt that Han was justified in shooting first. The smuggling trip was his last chance to pay his debt back to Jabba and the last thing he wants is a trigger-happy, and greedy (pun unintended) bounty hunter to ruin it. It also establishes his persona as being in a world of gray.

I wanted to repost what I thought of this artwork from the May 4th special comment thread where I was introduced to this piece:
I actually was drawn to enjoy this artwork by vashperado, it's very elegant in design, and the diagonal path of the opposing lightsabers have a similarity, like either side could naturally slide up or down into each other. Β Would Rey become one with the dark side? Β Will Kylo be brought back to the light? Β Familiar questions in Star Wars' character arcs, but this picture visualizes it in a sharply fascinating way.
