Outstanding work! I'm trying to make similar badges for a Planetside 2 outfit. Would you be willing to share the Illustrator/Photoshop files you used to create those? : )

I use a lot of different techniques. I usually start by tracing out the main shapes in Adobe Illustrator. One I have that all setup I export the file to a layered PSD file. That's where I use a combination of texture overlays and bevels to create either a leather or cloth texture. The seams are done with the zig-zag filter in Illustrator. I also paly with inner and outer glows set to a dark color and multiply to make the raised areas pop. Subtle use of drop shadows and satin overlays can be effective too. For beveled outline I also use the stroke bevel technique with the bevel profile set to the ring profile. You can bump that up for metals or lower it for cloth. Play with transparency modes too. Sometimes you stumble upon really cool effects.

I had a look through all of your patches, really good work!! I cant remember having seen half of them in BSG, but the detail and 'embroidered' look is nailed down...
