This isn't meant a commentary on that particular 'conspiracy theory'/meme that was going around a little while ago (for like two minutes ); it seemed like there'd been too many shows that "look like this" in a fairly short amount of time and some mistakenly assumed they all come from the same place. Closer to reality is the fact that when something becomes popular (Gravity Falls, Steven Universe, etc) other companies naturally try to replicate the success by taking elements from it and just pasting them into a different story/concept, typically starting with the most obvious parts like the art-style.

This is, of course, no guarantee that the result is automatically going to be GOOD (or bad, to be fair ), but I can certainly appreciate it not exactly coming across as the most "creative" thing to do.
