This is a great reference for ship adopts 
On another note, though, for Applejack and Rarity being one species family - Rarity's father is an earth pony and in the group photo ( [link] ) the first row has a unicorn filly. Of course it's just me being OCD so don't take it too seriously ^^

We don't know that Rarity's father is an earth pony or unicorn - he's never taken off his hat.
And, I have seen the unicorns in the front row. (there's two) It makes sense that a whole family wouldn't stay pure forever, and animators often make mistakes, or just use pre-existing background characters. By Applejack's family I meant her (presumably dead) parents, Big Mac, Applebloom, and Granny Smith, who we can presume are all earth ponies. There might be deviations in the entire Apple line.

For the Cheerilee x Big Mac, what would be good for a cutie mark? Cheerilee's seems hard to pair with big mac's. her cutie mark symbolizes her care for each of her students, and her desire to help them learn and grow, and big mac's... well, is an apple, it seems to run in the family that they work on an apple farm.

This is very useful, but I have a question.
What about Pinkie Pie? Her family comes in hues of grey. Pinkie is the only PINK one!
You could make an argument about her Grandma, but we haven't even seen her yet.

Yes, we don't know what her Grandma looks like. Maybe she was pink as well? But is could have been any relative up the tree. It was highly unlikely for her to get that gene, but it must have come from somewhere.
But the thing is, now that she has that gene, it's more likely that she will pass it on to her children. It is possible they could be gray/brown (her father), but again, it is more likely that the foal's coloration comes from the parents.

Nice! But, the one thing that ticked me off....
Rarity's talent is not dressmaking.
If it was, she would have scissors or fabric for a cutie mark.
Her real talent is gem-finding. Hence her cutie mark, and her story in that episode when the mane six get their marks. XD
