Hmm. So I recently adopted a Luna x Fluttershy pony from someone and need help figuring out her cutie mark, what would you suggest? I was thinking she'd have the splotch like Luna does, but then something animal related instead of the moon (not one of Fluttershy's cutie mark butterflies.)

Hmmm thats not a bad idea. So I have two choice's... an owl, or a butterfly (not the ones of FS's cutiemark, a different butterfly.) consisting of dark blues and a half moon on each wing. Hmmmm decisions.

Ah, thanks! Although it also depends on. If you just want an simple OC, as little baby or something, i would follow mlpstarr her idea. If you would really want something complicated for a shiny one you could try. I dunno youre decision tho xD

Nice tutorial, only one thing
there is nothing wrong with markings and heterochromia, Troubleshoes has a nose marking, and while show characters don't have heterochromia, what's wrong with making something a little different?

I don't think there's anything wrong with making a character with heterochromia! I have some myself. This is just a guide for show accurate shippoals as well as a little bit of genetics.

I can answer that!
The problem with heterochromia in characters is that, in real life, it's a very rare trait (6 out of 1,000 in humans), and when it does appear it usually has a reason. Dogs or cats with heterochromia either have it because of facial coloration or chimeraism . In cases that don't fall under those two categories, it's speculated to be caused by disease or injury within the womb, OR are genetically hereditary, which means the parents both had the recessive gene that enabled it to happen. In most cases, the difference is barely noticeable (i.e. one brown eye and dark brown eye).
Much of the time, heterochromia comes with hearing loss on the side with the lighter eye, poorer vision in the lighter eye, discoloration in skin or hair, and many other conditions.
(source )
Also, yes, heterochromia is far more common in animals like dogs, but seeing as how ponies are treated like humans in the series, it makes more sense to either relate them to humans or horses. "Horses with complete heterochromia have one brown and one white, gray, or blue eye—complete heterochromia is more common in horses with pinto coloring." - Wikipedia
Science aside, though, the reason people frown upon heterochromia in OCs, is because people use it as a cop-out, or simply to make their character seem special. If you're using it as a cop-out, it shows that you couldn't decide which one you wanted more, so you picked both. This is the same reason why people frown upon alicorns. It shows you're not creative enough to take the eye colors of both parents and find a halfway color, or just pick one parent's eye color, or choose a variation of one or the other. In the case of wanting to be special, it's that alone that makes people frown upon it. There is a difference between wanting to be unique, and wanting to be special. To be unique is to be one-of-a-kind, to have a trait that is yours, and only yours in the exact conditions you have it. To be special is to be better than anyone else around you, including those with the same trait. Which, on that note, a lot of people use heterochromia in their OCs (Homestuck trolls and MLP ponies in particular), which not only makes it not very unique or special, but it also goes against the fact that it's a very, very, rare trait to have.
I've seen characters whose defining traits are their heterochromia. While there's nothing wrong with basing a character off a single trait initially, saying that their entire life and purpose revolves around having an oddly-colored eye is just... It mocks the people who have it. It's like saying "If you don't have heterochromia, you're nothing". It also makes your character flat and one-dimensional.
In regards to the markings, this tutorial was made in 2012, before any multi-colored ponies had appeared in the series. During that time, and even now, people use markings as a lazy cop-out because they, again, can't decide what color their pony should be. The person can't decide if they want the pony to be yellow with pink eyes, or blue with green eyes, so they make their pony blue and yellow with pink and green eyes, instead of a slightly greenish-blue pony with dark teal, or even purple-ish eyes.
Example: prntscr.com/8mkp0t
Now, it goes without saying that both of these traits are perfectly fine, if you do it right, with the right conditions.
For example, one of my ponies, Pumpkin Slice, has heterochromia. It's relatively subtle, with pink and dark pink eyes, but it also corresponds with her having two different sets of colors on either side of her body.
Prince Silvermoon has markings, and is an alicorn, because he is intended to be Luna's heir, and his markings are simple and are just slightly darker than his normal body color.
Lullaby has sock markings as well, and the colors tie into her overall design to compliment the overabundance of blues with a little more of the pink that's in her hair.

Fab comment, not many people are well-read and well-versed enough to write such a long and informative comment! I appreciate you taking the time <3
While I totally agree with your points, I jut think people ought not to stifle people with how they think an OC should be made. I like tutorials like, how to pick colours that go well together, or how to doll a base, but telling people how to make a character born from their maker's creativity and imagination is just a no-no, hence my comment
Thank you again

You're very welcome! I think the thing with the features you mentioned, and alicorns, is that it's like.... Minions. It's something that's abused so much because it was something really great and unique, that nobody wants to see it anymore. It's been done again and again in all the wrong ways to the point of it being hard to see when it's being used in a non-abusive way, because it's just simply hard to look at.
And sometimes people need a tutorial like this, saying how a shipping child should be made. Not a lot of people understand how genetics work, so they see two colors and decide to only go with one, or the other, or mix-n-match like a jigsaw puzzle. People should take time, and put effort into researching how a character like this would actually come to be.
I'm just glad the tutorial maker is generally polite about her views, and doesn't think it's "flat out wrong and you should burn if you do it this way".
However... I did notice that her logic for the cutie marks seems... flawed. A cutie mark would not be hereditary, as special talents are not hereditary. My mother is a singer, and I'm a writer/artist, and my brother is a technological genius. To make examples of ponies who don't have cutie marks yet (aside from Sweetie Bell, whose cutie mark is technically a heart as shown by G3) seems absolutely silly.
