Starter Level - Confidence:
This level focuses on your horse's confidence. Your horse should be able to approach new situations, obstacles and locations with a certain level of boldness. Show your horse checking out the barrels, in a new location or situation they might encounter at a show. Show them charging boldly ahead and building their confidence.
First Level - Softness:
Softness and flexibility will help your horse maintain balance around barrels, start and stop better and be more aware of your body language. Show your horse bending and flexing at the poll, bending at a walk or trot around a barrel.
Medium Level - Control:
In this level your horse will expand upon the softness learned in the last level. Ask your horse to change gaits with as little body movement and force as possible. Stop, start and turn on a dime. Start learning the pattern at a trot or an easy lope, focus on the lead changes between barrels if practicing at the lope.
Advanced Level - Collection:
This level teaches your horse to collect or extend their gait. Ultimately building muscle and balance. Show your horse extending their gait between barrels, at the trot or canter, or collecting to make the turn around a barrel.
First Star Level - Consistency:
Consistency in training and runs is the key to a good barrel racer. Practice making the first turn until it’s perfect which will help lead to a good run. Improve your timing and tightness around the barrels, perfect your extension, lead changes and collection. Run the pattern and run it again.
After everything else is perfect start adding speed. Practice leaving the chute and approaching the first barrel at a gallop. Practice galloping between barrels and increasing your speed after that last barrel.
Guidelines -
Horses must be at least 2 years old for the first two levels, and should be above 3 years old to complete the training. Any age of handler is allowed as long as they can maintain control of the horse.
Leg protection isn’t required but is encouraged as are helmets or cowboy hats
Severe sharp bits, spurs and electric shock devices are strictly prohibited
