Starter Level - Flexibility:
At this level horses should have the basics of handling and riding down and are focusing on learning to be more flexible, willing to bend and remain soft through turns and maneuvers. Practice turning and flexing with the lightest touch possible.

First Level - Softness:
Softness and flexibility will help your horse maintain balance when completing patterns, start and stop better and be more aware of your body language. Show your horse bending and flexing at the poll, bending at a walk, trot and canter. Remaining soft during a stop and rein back.

Medium Level - Collection:
This level teaches your horse to collect or extend their gait. Ultimately building muscle and balance. Show collection at the lope and during the rein back.

Advanced Level - Control:
In this level your horse will expand upon the softness learned in the last level. Ask your horse to change gaits with as little body movement and force as possible. Stop, start and turn on a dime. Start learning the pattern at a trot or an easy lope, focus on maintaining control and consistency while performing different patterns.

First Star Level - Maneuvers:
Maneuvers make up the different patterns in a reining competition. Make sure your horse has a general mastery of all of them and is comfortable performing them in a busy environment. Practice maneuvers such as the sliding stop, roll back or any of the others listed below.

Second Star Level - Agility:
Horses should move with speed and urgency through the patterns. This should be done with as little movement from the rider as possible, horses should make asking maneuvers seem effortless. Show your horse quickly moving through a complete pattern at speed and responding quickly.

Guidelines -

  • Horses must be at least 2 years old for the first two levels, and should be above 3 years old to complete the training. Any age of handler is allowed as long as they can maintain control of the horse.

  • Leg protection isn’t required but is encouraged as are helmets or cowboy hats

  • Severe sharp bits, spurs and electric shock devices are strictly prohibited
