Starter Level - Cowsense:
For some horses this level is really easy if they were bred for working cows. For others it might not come as naturally to track a cow's movement, other horses might think cows are scary and will need to be desensitized to being around cows. Show what you horse thinks about cows, are cows no big deal for you horse, do they naturally want to push them around. Or does your horse not show interest to them, or think they’re a scary monster.
First Level - Desensitization:
This level will help your horse in day to day life, ranch work and for breakaway roping. Your horse should be used to all things ranch work. Your horse should be comfortable with a rope being swung around them most importantly. But also should be comfortable dragging logs, being around livestock, dogs and other horses. Cows. Random banging noises and ranch machinery.
Medium Level - Whoa:
In this level you’ll be fine tuning your horses stop. Typically you don’t want your horse to stop until you have the calf roped., some horses might anticipate this and stop too early. Your horse should also be easy to stop, just the shift of your weight back should tell them they need to stop. Show your horse practicing stopping with or without attempting to rope a calf.
Advanced Level - Flexation:
This level will focus on getting your horse soft and supple. Your horse should respond to the littlest movement or the shift of your weight. Flexing exercises will help your horse to remain loose which can be helpful while chasing zig zagging calves. Show your horse flexing at the pole, doing circles, stretching down or following a hard to catch calf.
First Star Level - Straightness:
In this level you will focus on teaching your horse to stay straight down the chute and after the calf unless they are told to turn. A lot of horses will anticipate the calf being roped and swerve to the side instead of stopping straight. You also want your horse to learn to back up in a straight line very quickly. Show your horse running in a straight line, stopping straight or backing up straight. Or show your horse swerving to the side as you work on this step.
Second Star Level - Timing:
In this level you will learn to read the calf along with your horse and as a team will know when to leave the chute, when to throw the rope and when to stop. Show you and your horse successfully roping a calf, or an image of your rope falling short or, the calf getting too far away to rope easily.
Guidelines -
Horses must be at least 3 years old and riders must be at least 16 years old
Leg protection is allowed for all levels
Excessive spurring, jerking on the mouth or whipping are not allowed
Calves must be between 200-400 pounds, calves must not have horns over 3 inches long
