Starter Level - Leading:
Horses should start by learning the basics of leading and ground manners. If they are not yet familiar with a halter you should show them learning to wear one. Or if they are to be shown in a headstall show them getting used to one. If they already know the basics of leading show them fine tuning and brushing up on the basics they already know.
First Level - Responsiveness:
At this level the horse will learn to become more responsive, you want your horse to be able to read your body language and know exactly when you want them to stop, trot or walk with as little instruction from you as possible. Show your horse perfecting their transitions on the lead.
Medium Level - Straightness:
Horses should remain straight while leading, it is important for their overall appearance and conformation. Teach your horse to travel straight by leading in between ground poles, or use a wall to help keep their body straight.
Advanced Level - Posture:
Most horses have a certain way they are required to move and stand according to their breed standard. For some horses this movement and posture are very natural and others may need to be taught or their position may need fine tuning. Show your horse moving or standing in the way their breed standard specifies.
First Star Level - Pivot:
Horses should pivot away from their handlers smoothly and with precision and as neatly as possible. Teach your horse to pivot, the horse should respond quickly and their hooves should fall in the as small of a circle as possible.
Practice all the previous levels by tying them all together in a halter class pattern. In this pattern horses will be asked to walk, trot and pivot at certain points and then stand for inspection. Try different patterns so your horse doesn’t get used to just one routine.
Guidelines -
Horses must be over 6 months old to be shown in halter classes
Handlers must be over 12 years old to train in halter classes but must not be allowed to show a horse they can’t handle
Horses must wear tack appropriate to their breed standard and age
