Starter Level - Drive:
Show your horse learning to ground drive, becoming familiar with the required aids, the whip and basic harness equipment.
First Level - Desensitization:
Once your horse is comfortable with the basics, start desensitizing them to the other equipment necessary for showing. Introduce the cart, and show harness. Let your horse become comfortable with the weight and feel of pulling a harness. You could also show your horse learning to be patient with all the grooming involved or desensitizing to new locations like shows.
Medium Level - Teamwork:
Your horse must learn to work as a team with other horses, show your horse working as a team of two or more. Or if they are going to be a single driving horse, show them working with their handlers.
Advanced Level - Showmanship:
Show your horse all decked out and showing off it’s best gaits. Most driving horses are bred to be flashy and confident, let your horse show that good breeding off. Or if you horse is more shy and laid back, problem solve how you plan to show them to their best.
First Star Level - Strength:
Show your horse pulling a heavy cart on their own or with a team. A lot of draft specialty shows will have heavy carts, sometimes filled with hay, lumber or ale barrels. This is to show that not only can your horse put on a good show in all the required gaits but can do what a draft horse was bred to do.
Second Star Level - Reliable:
By now you horse should be an old hand at shows, the sights, sounds and workings of a show shouldn’t bother your horse. Show your horse remaining cool and calm during all the commotion of a show. Or maybe you’re still working on this and your horse acts up
Guidelines -
Horses must be at least 5 years old, handlers must be at least 18 years old
A driving whip is required in the ring at all times
Class divisions include: Single cart, team, unicorn, four, six and eight
