This is just incredible - I'm regretting being away from dA so long. You've captured so much texture in the grain of the wood and the water, the backdrop is angled such that I feel I could step into the picture, and your model is lovely as usual, superbly dressed.

When you're rich and famous, let us all know, k?

How are things otherwise? How's your acquisition of language-skill going? (I'm trying to learn German still and hahaha ich bin schlecht...)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

VeraAda In reply to akarra [2010-05-24 13:06:29 +0000 UTC]

Yeah things are ok, still unemployed but having a good time. Spanish is good. Loving my 3 hours of weekly dark-room time (but that's not new >.<)
Do you find learning cases in German difficult?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

akarra In reply to VeraAda [2010-05-24 22:06:11 +0000 UTC]

I dunno: I'm not really speaking focused right now, I'm translating Heidegger (which sounds impressive, but truth be told, it's easier than reading a newspaper in German).

I'm watching the news on Der Spiegel whenever I can to see if I can pick up on things. The language still moves too fast for me, but sometimes I can make out a phrase or two and actually understand something, and I get all proud of myself.

What are you hoping to be employed as? Just curious, what's the ultimate career goal?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

VeraAda In reply to akarra [2010-05-25 04:32:25 +0000 UTC]

Is the translation for a class? Or are you doing it just for yourself?

I'm hoping to become an interpreter of Italian/English. I still have a long way to go (well, I'm about halfway there I think...) I already have my major in Italian. I can understand spoken/written Italian pretty well, but my speaking isn't too good. So I need to go to Italy to get fluent (hopefully sometime next year), then once I'm back here I'll be applying to do an Interpreting Diploma in Italian interstate (as they don't offer it in Italian in my state), and to do this I need to pass an exam to get in. After that, with the Diploma, I can work for the government. Best case scenario, I'll be done by 2014.

It sounds like a plan, and it sounds like something that will definitely happen.

I'm translating to get a language requirement done, the last thing that needs to be done before I can formally assemble readers and submit a proposal for my dissertation (I've been working informally on my dissertation for 3 years). What I need to do is going ok: what's amazing is that the professor who gave me the assignment doesn't meet with me (an example of his professionalism: telling me we would certainly meet, setting up a time, not showing at said time or giving me any indication he wouldn't be around AND then not responding to an e-mail when asked about another time to meet).

So I'm generally frustrated, and that comes out in various ways.

Wow, sounds intense. I wish you luck!
Messed up about the professor though... how very unprofessional of him.
Downright ridiculous actually - I'd be complaining to someone by now >.<
But I guess that's not really an option, is it?
I'm sorry your professor is being a twat!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

akarra In reply to VeraAda [2010-05-27 15:31:24 +0000 UTC]

I have complained, but things are a bit better right now - he gave me an assignment (yay!) but no specific time to meet (boo).

So I'm plugging away at the assignment right now.

Curious: are you reading anything for fun at the moment?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

VeraAda In reply to akarra [2010-05-27 17:10:43 +0000 UTC]

Well that's ok then. As long as he doesn't completely ignore you >.<

I am currently reading 'American Psycho' actually! It's good... very well written... but holy crap do I hate the main character. I'm actually kind of in the process of reading a LOT of books. Some I stopped reading a while ago, but I still intend to finish. It's just that a lot of the books I read I borrow from the library, and I rarely finish them by their due date, and often I can't renew them because other people have requested them too. So I'm also in the middle of reading 'the Wind up Bird Chronicle'. Also, because library books are more of a priority to read, I've had to put down books that I *own* which I've already started reading. These include 'On Photography' (Susan Sontag), 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest', and I still need to finish 'Perfume'...
So yeah, my reading is all over the place!

What are you reading?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

akarra In reply to VeraAda [2010-05-27 17:43:36 +0000 UTC]

I haven't read novels in a long, long while - I do need to get back to that. The last novel I read was sci-fi, Neal Stephenson's "The Diamond Age:" that was very good.

I finished Xenophon's "Hellenica" a week or two ago, and was thinking it might make for a good paper on ancient vs. modern politics, but I don't feel confident just writing (a scholarly paper is 8000 words minimum. I need to work out what sections I would want and do it piecemeal, I think). Now I'm still working on a slow reread of Plato's Republic, and there are times it gets frustrating and is a "I did two pages today, they were boring. Yay, I'm watching MTV."

VeraAda In reply to akarra [2010-06-01 12:48:10 +0000 UTC]

I used to be really slack with novel reading, but then I started writing up my 'to-read' list (which is now pretty huge and ever-growing), and I got scared at how much I want to read and how little I actually do. So now I try to always be in the process of reading a book. Otherwise I feel like I'm missing out or something.

Wow, a scholarly paper... and philosophical reading material... I don't know if I could ever get through that kinda stuff, even if I was interested (and I kind of am actually). I think the most philosophical book I've ever read was 'Sophie's World'. I never actually finished it either should get to that.
So what are you actually studying atm?

akarra In reply to VeraAda [2010-06-02 12:06:31 +0000 UTC]

My field is political science - technically, I should still be working on the dissertation, which is on Xenophon's Memorabilia. Political science divides into a number of subfields, I do theory.

I'll definitely give you a more full response later. I'm about to go out the door for the day but wanted to respond with something.

If you're interested in the sort of work I do, the following link goes to a blog entry that's a short write-up of a short work by Xenophon: [link]

Political science - I've always wondered what that actually entails. From the link you sent it seems intense, but really fascinating.
You really know your stuff then >.<
You may not read many novels any more, but you sure as hell read a lot of other material that I couldn't even attempt to understand.
In short... I'm impressed (and somewhat intimidated)
