Always wondered how many seconds a person can actually remain conscious after cardiac arrest. Would be good to know for anyone writing/drawing a death scene.

verticalfish In reply to Mephitinae [2012-07-11 17:28:36 +0000 UTC]

You'll pass out pretty quickly - within seconds. The brain needs a constant flow of oxygenated blood otherwise out you go!

I assumed as much, but I thought the sudden drop in blood pressure gets to you first.

In any case, I've always thought scenes where a dying character is saying something important, but abruptly stops mid-sentence and passes out without delay is unrealistic.

verticalfish In reply to Mephitinae [2012-07-12 18:16:03 +0000 UTC]

Ah, the unrealistic, but dramatic!
Also, you see people in medical dramas all the time trying to shock a flatline, right? You can't do that. Asystole (flatline) is an unshockable rhythm, so you can't use a defibrillator on it in real life. Unrealistic, but dramatic.

As an artist and someone interested in medicine, I never made that connection between venous and arterial bleeds. Thank you! Extremely insightful.

Just curious, could you do a tutorial of a vampire biting a person what it'd look like, like the blood flow and such. Trying to get the hang of that but not succeeding very well
