Is blood actually red or blue?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

verticalfish In reply to ZatchZ [2012-07-11 21:07:28 +0000 UTC]

Blood is red, always. Even when it is in your veins. It is that color because of the hemoglobin in the red blood cells, which contain iron, which becomes red when it combines with oxygen (the same thing gives rust, iron oxide, its color). The veins appear blue because of the Tyndall effect, which has to do with how the wavelength of light changes when it passes through a thick medium (skin). So in reality, nothing is really blue.

However, on a side note, some animals like squid and octopi use copper instead of iron in hemoglobin, and copper oxides are blue so they have truly blue blood.

Wow! This is great, not only do you explain what to do but you say why. Loving the mini biology lesson. It's a interesting subject. Makes me miss science. Haha
Thanks for the help! Looking at it this way should help making dramatic scenes with blood more effective.
