I feel like I understand all the basics to perspective but when it comes to applying them, I feel all lost.. I don't know where to place the horizon line or how to arrange elements in the picture in a way that avoids appearing very cramped. I really don't understand backgrounds at all.. how do you when to stick with a solid color vs. when to add something to the background.. Also there are times when the perspective lines are not the same for all objects in the picture.. ex.. one object may have converging lines disappearing to the left and another below or above or to the left... Can you even do that?

My best advice would be to experiment and practice using different arrangements of horizon lines.
As for when to do bgs vs. solid color backgrounds, I typically try to avoid solid color bgs as much as I can, but sometimes they are necessary - for dramatic scenes, revelations and such.
There are more complex ways to use vanishing points (having 2 vanishing points in an image), but this is more advanced. i may cover this in another tutorial someday. But yes, it can be done.
