It's definitely more of a tutorial than step by steps that don't explain anything. This is something that can be used in practice over and over again and it helps with the visualization when studying.

I think it counts as a tutorial. As a form of the principle of "Separation and Blending" it goes right to the heart of handling media of all kinds. Applies to ink drawing, pencil, paint (took me forever to apply it to the latter - which most people would probably find the easiest. XD) Very good tute. Short, sweet and to the point with excellent examples. Thanks.
Would also add that the key to improving is practice - and the hard part is sometimes knowing what to practice and, then, how to practice it. Here you've suggested an excellent way to go about practicing hard and soft edges, starting with observation using life and reference.
A big problem I've had is getting rid of the "fuzz" or "smoke", making a hazy image sharp where it needs to be sharp. This helps.
