An instrumental goal (as opposed to a terminal goal) is a goal you can pursue not because the rewards are something you're necessarily after, but they enable you to pursue other goals more efficiently. No matter what your intentions are in life, several aspects of your person are worth upgrading, even at considerable cost. These include, but are not limited to: strength, courage, intelligence, empathy.
