Description
It's not usual to have five eyes, even for me. Nor is it usual for me to be larger than your average Earth-like planet. This started as a sketch as part of a short sequence I did. It took me a long time to turn it into this image and I did so even though I have some dissatisfaction with regards to anatomy here. I hope you like it.
Thank you for looking.
Thank you for reading.

I love your witty self-observations, you are so matter-of-fact when it comes to how Vex fits into the dimensions!
This is very cool though, definitely the best piece you've uploaded so far because the colors, lighting, effects, and lineart give is a polished look. You're obviously pretty skilled with you art, and it'd be cool to see more finished work. Is there any reason behind this? Do you just find it harder and harder to finish art these days? I guess I understand. Few of my pieces progress past the sketch phase, ahaha. Back to this picture, great work with it overall. I like the composition and how it's complimented by all those limbs and stars. It certainly feels mighty! I cannot offer any more critiques, except my previous bit about details. Keep up the excellent work, Vex, your art's great and I'm super happy to see you posting again.
The eyes are pretty neat, by the way! How cool to have five eyes and three dots. Is there any purpose behind the number, or is it all aesthetic?

I'm glad my reflective musings are entertaining. I'll try not to keep them all to myself.
I used to create a single sketch for an idea, concept or inspiration I got. Then I'd work on it and nothing else; working and reworking the lines, shading and lightning. Months would pass for a single image. Meanwhile, other ideas and inspiration would come and go, false promises of later revisiting them attached, as I couldn't be tempted to work on something other than 'the project' lest it become abandoned. Then, I would post my work and it would be greeted with not much more than a loud cricket. I realized maybe the idea I devoted myself to wasn't that great. Maybe one of the later ones that floated by would have been more deserving of the effort. I realized this approach didn't let me express what I wanted to express When I wanted to express it. Ideas were lost that should have been captured. And much time was spent on projects that perhaps didn't have much soul to them from the get-go.
This is why I started posting sketches, and attempt to make one every day. I don't usually succeed in making one daily. But when I get an idea or inspiration, I will be damn sure it's not getting away without at least an attempted sketch. I could go back and turn any one of my sketches into a full-blown colored image. (World started out as one of the daily sketches.) I Do feel like doing so. But I want you to weigh in at least a little on which ones are worth the time and effort. And I certainly won't be letting any ideas slip my continent-sized, scaly claws.
Sorry for the somewhat-rant there.... didn't know I had that in here, heh. Back to the picture. Thank you. I'm glad you say it feels mighty. I was attempting to show sheer enormity. About the eyes and the dots: There's a reason for everything.

Yes!! I agree with you on all of this, very well said. My best-received pictures were always simple concepts and such, and I think that's because some peoples' concepts are just better than their visual stuff. I'm one of those and I think you are too. We've got so many strong, pounding concepts in our brains and we must get it out NOW. The occasional full picture never hearts though, eh? It's a nice treat amidst the sketches and concepts-- kind of like this picture, decked out in full color. Vex really is a great-looking character, when you can see his shimmering gold!

I really feel like he looks too smooth here... too, lacking texture. But I recall trying textures for 2 days and I kept coming back to this. Anyway,

Thank you very much, AC!
It was fun to make this. I think I'm slightly better with a pencil than a tablet when it comes to line-art.
I still have that commission you did for me! It's awesome.

Paper has friction.Ā OMG, DRAWING ON GLASS OR PLASTIC IS EVIL.Ā Just sayin.'
@_@Ā I wish I could go back in time and slap myself in the face for that commission.Ā First (only) one I ever did, and I was just thinking again yesterday how ashamed I am of it.Ā I want to redo it.Ā It's never been worth the amount you paid for it.

Friction, yes! I thought that perhaps the gestures and visual feedback being in different places was throwing me off. But this makes more sense. Also I've never been quite happy with how pen pressure works. Ehhh, I know, tools and software and settings. The mood I'm in when I want to draw is exactly not the mood in which I want to spend time messing with settings.
I don't think you should be ashamed of that work. I'm looking at it. I like it. You did spend a significant amount of effort on it. Gees! When was this? The file timestamp says Nov-2013 but I somehow doubt that. Oh and remember GNH? Ha! (About redo: I'm not about to turn down art offers from you! :b)

You and me both.Ā Same reason I stopped trying to use most art mediums, though... I've used pens and pencils all my life to write with and doodle on my homework, I understand how to use and hold them without thinking about it anymore.Ā I still haven't fixed adjusted the pen pressure on this new tablet that I've had for a week and a half, even though I'm using it every day...
Uhhh... it had to have been in 2010.Ā I think I got the art supplies and learned how to use them in the spring, and I had to have done it before I moved... I think autumn of 2010?Ā And I do remember GNH. xDĀ Is that still around?Ā (Redo?Ā Heh... another thing I could, should, would put on my todo list, except it would never get done.Ā Maybe someday, if I get comfortable enough with an art medium to draw in a trance state again.Ā For that one, I was half rubbing it on with a charcoal stick and half smearing it around with my fingers.)

My art-happiness improved when I got a nice A3 sketchbook and decided to at least attempt to sketch something every day. No need to finish everything. No need for everything to be anywhere near good. Of course the 'every day' part didn't last very long. It seems we've all got too long todo lists. I've been silently considering just uploading some of the sketches, since many of them are not eligible for public display.
(I just looked for GNH and couldn't find it.)

(Sorrow.Ā Oh, well.)
I did that a while back, just uploaded bunches of unfinished sketches.Ā If/when my scanner arrives, that's what I intend to do again.Ā Just... acknowledge it, record it, show it, and not boast until I have something done and worth boasting about.

There will be a lot.Ā I intend to space it out, so related stuff is together as a single deviation and watchers don't get flooded with messages.Ā Maybe one batch a week.Ā I really hope it gets here soon... and that the scanner part of my scanner/copier/printer still works.Ā After 3 years in a box, with the ink cartridges still in it, I'm almost certain that the printer part won't work anymore.Ā Good thing I don't need to print.

(This picture of mine got added to a da Group. I thought I'd watch that group for a while and see if I like it. It gave me 400+ messages within a few hours. I do not desire this.)
I hope it all works. What format paper do you work on? I don't own a scanner so I've just been taking pictures. It's impossible to get it lit evenly.

(Ugh.Ā Bad group.)
Ironically, that's sometimes a problem with scanners, too.Ā Or at least getting colors and pencil marks to show up as clearly digitally as they do in person.Ā Infinitely better than a camera, though.
I just use whatever paper is around.Ā Various sizes of notepad (with various qualities of paper), printer paper, or whatever.Ā It's best if you use a paper that can lay flat and doesn't stick out past the scanner glass (so, unbound from a notebook and not a huge "art class" pad), but as long as the image fits flat inside the glassy section, anything will work.

I used to have a feed-through type scanner. It would freak out of the paper was anything other than A4. I suppose taking pictures is all right for me since I'll always be tracing over the sketches if I'm turning them into more than just sketches.

Eesh, feed-throughs are awful.Ā Flat-bed.Ā Always use flat-bed.
Fair enough.

Ah you finished it! I do like how the planet came out; you can even see the atmosphere! Oddly, I think my favorite thing is the hand shadow on the planet. More!
