JelArts recently had a video on layer modes, so what I did here is... basically exactly what she did in her video! I'm trying to force myself to both shade more often and play with color theory more often. Honestly what really caught my attention in her video was she used layer modes on the lineart! For some reason I have never thought to do that. 
So here's to playing with layer modes! They can very easily be used poorly, but with enough experimenting and an artistic eye, they make for some really neat coloring effects!
(For speed and simplicity, the shade color and the highlight color are on the same layer and mode together. I know shading/highlighting should really be separate.)

Thanks! It's so sloppy and so simple but I've enjoyed staring at it for long periods of time, the colors are so vibrant.
