I've been interested in the Wizard of Oz since I was about three years old, so I finally went and got Gregory Maguire's book Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. This is the result

Absolutely gorgeous! I've never seen the musical, and the book is slow, so I've only made in 20 pages in, but I'm addicted to the soundtrack. Especially "Defying Gravity". You have such a great style...this piece is excellent!

Did you enjoy the musical or the book more? I'm curious because I've met maybe one person who liked the book more, but then I am a theatre-geek and so are apparently a lot of my friends. I like how Glinda looks likes she's dancing!

Aah, see I thought that was all put on in the book -- that the author was trying too hard to make her seem superstrong and in need of no one, and that in doing so it just weakened her character. She may not be as fierce in the musical, but the relationships she has with other characters seems so much more real. I'd like see the show again keeping in mind that she could be seen simply as a puppet or projection.

I saw it in the book as much more she had a nasty streak in her, and was too stubborn to admit she needed anyone rather than that she didn't actually, which made it much more likely that she could be perceived as Wicked - even in the musical the powers she possess are outwith her control - it's not her fault in the life sciences class when she goes mental and controls everybody, which to me shows as a lack of conviction in her beliefs in the first place; if it's all an emotional reaction she removes herself of blame, the green girl was a little too golden for me. I think in the book it was obvious she did need people, she just denied herself the option of being close with anyone - even Fiyero was kept at a distance, and she mourned him for 20 years nearly!
