This piece has a decidedly European sense. I am a little torn about which direction to take in talking about it. One of the great things about it is the very careful and deliberate use of line work. All the details are in place and the village behind the wall looks interesting and varied. While this black and white line work is generally amazing, I hate to say that the purpose of all those lines is lost. By this, I mean that a black and white piece should not require color in order to be clear. I only notice the foreground figure because a balloon is pointing to it. This can be remedied by either blacking up the cliff foreground or darkening the figure. Next, for a long time, I only saw one flying bird. The other, with too much detail, immediately blends into the background. Solution, either spot some blacks on the animals to help them pop or diminish/fade the details in the village near the animals or reduce the details on the second one.
I do understand the length of time required to create one of these. It requires patience, planning, an eye for detail and a measure of faith. Faith because the end results of all the toil can not always be seen until the finish which could be days, months or even longer from the beginning. Congratulations to you on a fine drawing. Despite things I may have mentioned, it is a strong, wonderful piece showcasing a lot of talent and craft. In the future, I will be looking for more wonderful drawings. Thank you. RICK

Thanks for the input Rick. You're spot on with your critique of this as a b/w piece, it's a struggle for me. Your European reference was very insightful and may explain it. I'm heavily influenced by European comics, the Ligne Claire movement especially. Normally this kind of style will have no line weight or shading at all but I really want to make the inks stand on their own before the colorist works their magic. I'm not succeeding on that front quite yet and I appreciate the reminder. It's easy to lose yourself in detail on a piece like this and ignore the big picture. I want the gracefulness of the European comics and the readability of American comics, but I'm not sure that it's compatible. I'll keep trying though

VinceAndrews-
I try to refrain from giving criticism to people I don't know because it is hard to figure out what their reaction might be. When scrolling through my inbox, your work stood out. The few "flaws" I mention above do not negate the strong work you have produced. With a small amount more planning, this could be an even more successful piece. Working with the amount of detail as you have an inherent danger is in not showing restraint. It is a hard lesson to learn. More is not always better as in this case a gentle taper of detail using atmospheric perspective. I think the question you and I are both asking is how can this be a successful piece in black and white. You are actually so close you should be able to taste it.
For European influence I see Moebius among others. Surprisingly for American artists I see Winsor McCay. Good company to be in even if not your direct intention. I want to encourage you to continue making great art, experimenting with new ideas and techniques, and enjoying yourself. The secret is that art is the very best thing in life and some of us are lucky to make art.
Thanks,
RICK

Hey thanks I refrain from critiquing for the same reason, some people can't take it. I'm always happy to get slapped around a little if it makes me a better artist And yeah, McCay is awesome too, I've got a huge coffee table book of his Little Nemo run that is always inspirational to flip through.

About how you imagined I would react. Β You said I would hate it. Β Well, that's too strong, I don't hate it, just see it as a fixation that prevents the artwork from developing. Β

Well if you don't hate it that's better than expected. I'll keep on working and getting better.

sorry to butt in but an obsession is what defined Moebius as an artist too. Just my 2 cents.Β

NP. Β It's appreciated.
In response, in terms of the discussion, recall that I said fixation, not obsession. Obsession can drive one forward; fixation keeps one where he is.

Thanks! You bust out some pretty awesome detail when you want to, I know it's hard to pump it out though, I try to really challenge myself on at least one page per issue, but I also do a lot of minimalist backgrounds and I don't do my own coloring
