Nice drawing - nice modeling of the forms.  You can push that farther by thinking consciously about a light source and figuring out how it affects where and how to indicate forms with lines - and then consider how it affects line weight and the threshold between line and tone.  In fact, when you introduce realistic lighting, you're always drawing tonally.  Even when you draw a line, you think of the line in terms of tone.  That's a lesson of the great masters. In addition, you've started indicating the local color with tone, showing caves with tone, and showing changes in the surface planes using arbitrary modeling tone.  This is all very positive.

The one thing that bugs me is the modified anatomy where it makes no sense.  Some lines have a nice flow based on complementary reciprocity, like the convex, concave, convex profile of the underside of the arm.  But that hook or notch at the triceps as it bends in and flows down to the elbow just makes no sense in terms of the way a muscle connects with bone.  Save the hooks and notches for fins, scales and boney armored protrusions.  Keep muscle and sinew flowing in one direction, never turning back on itself.

thanks! the hook on the triceps is a bony protrusion. i guess it would make more sense on the forearm though.

There is one on the forearm which is just fine.  You see it all the time; it's just natural to extend it that way at that location.  But an inside "whorl" on the arm, where it's supposed to be flesh . . . eee.  Just doesn't look/feel right at all.  Maybe on a robot, okay, but not on something organic.

Sorry.  Not trying to beat it to death.  it's a very good drawing.  I like how you're progressing.  I like that you're not stuck on the plateau of "good enough for me" and instead seem to be following a path of natural development with no end in sight.

Love it. Quite imaginative for a new alien. I hope we'll see this guy ... girl ... it ... in Space Dogs some time ...

thanks! I'm not totally sure about the design, there's going to be a major character later on who is this species, and the mouth might cramp my ability to have him emote. i'll have to play around with it sometime and see what i can make it do

Barbarian-J In reply to VinceAndrews [2015-01-06 18:56:36 +0000 UTC]

Well, the fun part is that it's an alien, so you can have it express emotions in a different way from what we're used to. It can flap it ears when laughing, squint when angry, et cetera. With some imagination, you can even spin some jokes around that ...

I'll probably post them when I get a chance to do them. Right now I'm full tilt on inks for issue 3 except my sketchbook, which is all architecture right now.
