Description Pterosaurs are my favorite dino-adjacent prehistoric animals.
They were literally fireless dragons and there is nothing better than that.
*DISCLAIMER: This is OBVIOUSLY VERY SPECULATIVE, and in many ways is more fantastical than paleontological. I'm well aware of the "inaccuracies" but nevertheless here it is, the Quetzacoatlus.Β

You keep saying more fantastical then paleontological, but while yes they dont have evidence, there is also nothing inaccurate or wrong about it, since there is also no evidence against it.Β

Quetzalcoatlus is probably the closest thing we've ever had to a real dragon. A MASSIVE flying reptile the size of a giraffe. The only thing missing it fire breath.

Reminds me of David Peters' reconstructions (except he is, shall we say, a bit crazy with his support for bipedal launch and the fact that he dreams up evidence in photoshop).

who cares about scientific inaccuracies lmao its art \o v o/

if you're interested though you should totally check out the recently discovered Yi Qi! its not a pterosaur, but its name literally means "strange wing," and you'll understand why when you see how completely ridiculous it is lmao. but its so cool i cant help but love it ahh

I also always thought Pterosaurs were like realistic dragons. Seriously, riding one of those suckers back then would have been amazing. Beautiful details in the feet and crest. I love how the environment just fits with this guy.Β

ohmygiddyaunt [2015-11-04 21:22:41 +0000 UTC]

This specimen has a lot of inaccuracies... For example, tibia and fibula are too short and the feet are too large, almost digitigrade when they should be plantigrade. The tail is too long, Quetzalcoatlus' was as short as a bird one and probably covered entirely on a coat of hair-like filaments. The head is small in comparison with its body, it should reach twice the size of the torso. The fingers should look like a vestigial organ whose claws were weaker or almost missing. The eyes are wrongly located, but that must be due to the bad proportions of its head. The pteroid is nowhere to be seen and logically there should be tissue attached to it. And finally it's skin wrapped.

I suppose you want to make it look like a fantasy/monster creature because it's your style and intention and I understand. But this is not a Quetzalcoatlus, just something vaguely inspired on itΒ Β

Thanks for all the great info. Like I said in my description this was not meant to be a "scientifically accurate" rendering. It was meant to be on the fantastical. It was deliberate fantasy rendition. As you can see from my other work I'm not nor do identify as a paleo artist. but thanks anyways.Β

WaffeeIsAwesome In reply to SnakeP4F [2015-11-04 10:29:22 +0000 UTC]

Their wings are nothing to worry about, their beak would be the real danger. I think humans would have to live in caves and underground if such creatures still existed.

2m long beaks after all! They were like spears!
Not to mention, that those pterosaurs were as tall as giraffes, towering above most dinosaurs in their environment...
