It's been a long day without you, my friendAnd I'll tell you all about it when I see you again

This piece captures, with great intensity, the personality of two characters, their links to each other, and a situation, moment in time or set of generalized themes that surround them. The accompanying text reveals the situation to be one of friends going separate ways after a brief reunion.
The energetic, painterly form of the train, sky and ground show the vividness and brevity of the moment. The warm, faded colours of the scene illustrate a sense of nostalgia, and perhaps represent a sunset or dawn (or perhaps both), and the sense of departure and an era's end or of excitement, life and newness that they respectfully bring. The vitality and wonder of the situation is further enhanced by the jewel-like lensing or dust effect and rays of light, reinforcing that this departure, though it may be bittersweet, is not final or sorrowful and brings new vigor. It's worth noting the the serene clouds in the top left, transition through to the almost violent motion in the bottom right through a spectrum in between, with the more contemplative character and mouse at the top and leaping cat and more focused, energetic person in the middle. The diagonal lines help to add speed to the composition, while the cat and rays of light make you realise the depth of the image, making it pop and have a sense of action, which is further heightened by dramatic lighting.
It also shows the attention, nature and freedom of the character darting from the window. Their clear, thoughtful and nuanced focus conveys a great deal of personality. The rough, etched lines and turbulent form of their clothes being contrasted with the finer lines of their face and arms shows not just their movement and energy, but also their clarity of mind. Their expression, alignment with the cat and a pose that seemingly indicates that they are about to jump all contribute to a feeling of freedom, exploration and passion, not dissimilar from that of a cat. Indeed, the cat and mouse seem analogous to each character, though the humans also seem to display more personality than pure metaphors of species. Looking further at their expressions, they each seem to show a different take on the bittersweet nature of the situation, with the scarf-wearing person displaying a more sorrowful look. Each still seem to show an understanding of both perspectives, however, with the hat wearing person showing a hint of sadness and the other, something like somewhat fulfilled acceptance (I think?).
To summarize, the vision for this piece is beautifully cognizant and detailed and is portrayed and communicated very effectively. The composition and themes, though the latter are familiar and well known, are both superbly executed, and the characterization and expression of the subjects is masterful. The technique is polished and matches the scene perfectly, and the expressions, clarity, composition and technique combine for great impact, warranting full marks for each in my opinion.

Their character comes across so well! I would love to see a story with them. Have you ever thought of just doing short simple comics? It definitely looks like you have stories to tell, and your art already conveys so much, even just lineart would be cool. I would love to explore the worlds you've made!
Also, you've done so much amazing art over the years, I don't understand why you don't get more comments!
Sorry for the stream of consciousness thoughts haha

Thanks! It's always nice to hear what others think about the illustration.
The story for them is a bit vague but that is a good idea also for practicing how to draw the characters consistently.
