Description Well, this took a while.

I was originally simply going to do yet another mecha musume, this time of the soviet Obyekt 279 [link] heavy tank, albeit after some bit of thinking I thought that rather than a skinny, short girl; if the 279 was a person it would probably be one giant muscled man with a beard. The 279 had one purpose alone: beat the shitburgers out of the enemy's best in the most unsubtle way possible. There's no way that can be conveyed with a moe girl, right?

Then after drawing him I sort of got carried along and did all the stuff going around him, particularly the PT-76 [link] light tanks that he's protecting, who are short skinny girls but it was a lightweight tank after all. The airplanes in the background are Su-17s

The whole atmosphere and colors of this was inspired by many images from the Imperial Guard from Warhammer 40,000, where you see all these huge masses of soldiers advancing furiously, with explosions and smoke behind them, running atop the piles of their own dead bodies.

Gotta say I like how this turned out. Maybe I'll do more elaborate pics like this more often. Probably one with western NATO tanks.

Ehm, I thought, "musume" means "girl" or "daughter" in Japanese. And here we see some manly barbed Soviet barbarian. I don't sure if we can call him "Musume"... "Otoko" (or something like this ), perhaps?

Anyway, this picture looks БЫЛИННО. (i.e. Epic). I even kinda feel sorry for their enemies, he-he!

Oh, and one important thing: Su-22 is export name of Su-17M2. So this is Su-17M2, NOT Su-22.
Besides, Object 279 was built in 1959, so Su-7 would be more suitable here.

What would Otoko mean?

And thanks a lot for the feedback, as well as the info about the Suhoi. I thought Su-22 was just a development name for the Su-17. Given the Su-17 came just 10 years after the 279, it might be possible that if the 279 had been produced, it could have served alongside early versions of the Su-17. Definitely would have been better to put a Su-7 though...

"Otoko"... Well, if my memory serves me correctly, it means "son" or "boy" in japanese. Like "Densha Otoko". But on your picture it is neither "son" nor "boy". It's some manly man, so I don't know how to call him, because I don't know which word for "big daddy" in Japanese. "Mecha Ojisan" maybe?

About Su-17. I'm working on KnAAPO, so I know something about the history of our products.
Su-17 had the following basic modifications: Su-17, Su-17M and M2, 3, 4 and training versions Su-17UM and UM3.
Export versions are: Su-17K, Su-20 (Su-17M for export), Su-22 (Su-17M2), -22U (-17UM), -22M (-17M3 with avionics from Su-17M2), -22UM3 (-17UM3), -22M3 (-17M3 with original avionics) and -22M4 (-17M4).
But note that in 1959 was produced only first Object 279. And "Object 279" itself is just a name for the prototype, so it would took some time (several years to be exact) for the start of series production and placement into service, so Su-17s are suitable enough for this picture. And, yes, you're right it could've serve alongside with early Su-17s as already outdated but still remained in service tank - old, barbed veteran. As well as last ones of PT-76s. So this picture is like their last battle. It's a bit sad, I even feel sorry for them.

But, please, correct the description. After all, it's 17 not 22 as we already know, okay?

Oh, thanks a lot. I've always loved the Su-17/22, it's my favorite Soviet cold war aircraft ever: [link] and yeah, the fact that the tanks depicted are aging equipment probably fighting their last battle against much-superior foes adds a whole layer of emotional subtext doesn't it?

I corrected the mistake in the description, thanks for pointing it out. And you work on KnAAPO? That's fucking awesome.

Halfwiccan In reply to VoughtVindicator [2011-04-24 05:08:42 +0000 UTC]

Well, it's not as great as you think. KnAAPO is just another old and dirty military plant. Outdated machinery, equipment and tools. Old workers living out their last days. It's "fucking awesome" only if you're a boss, sitting in the factory management and stealing everything you can reach. And if you're ordinary worker like I am, then you're just a low paid slave who working up to the neck in shit. There is nothing awesome in this fucking plant.

And you're absolutely right about the emotional subtext! This picture I associate with the "Brothers in Arms" by Dire Straits for some reason. Listening to this song, looking at your picture and crying...

Whoa, this looks epic and so detailed. So you drew a tough guy to resemble the tank, that's awesome. You're right... I think we can't just let the girls do all the heavy stuffs alone.
Very good work anyway, I love his heavy armor
