Description
Let's see, Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Shadow the Hedgehog, and Sonic '06, that's 4 games where the cast of Sonic interacted with normal looking humans. It took Sonic Team something like 9 years to realize "You know what, our cartoony protagonists look kind of out of place next to these guys." and replace the human cast in Sonic Unleashed with much more cartoonish types that stylistically match Sonic and his friends a little better. I'm not complaining, its pretty funny but I like the cartoony look of the townspeople, but there is one little problem I have. The entire population in all the cities are apparently human! I never see any other furry people except the new cast members that get introduced, yet the humans never react strangely, like "Holy crap! A talking hedgehog!" That means that mobians (That's the only name I know to call Sonic's "race" by) must be common enough that everyone has already seen them, but why do we never see anyone besides Sonic, his friends, and whatever new character is getting introduced? There were a couple dozen named human characters in this game, why couldn't they put in just a couple cartoon animals in? I'm ranting now.

I think the entire series was better back during the sega genesis time when Sonic was on "Mobius" and not "Earth". It just annoys me how he and a few key characters are all anthro creatures on a human world and no one aside from Eggman has tried to capture and experiment on them. Think its why i liked the comics more than the games but Sonic X is the most horrible Sonic series to have ever existed

well SA1 SA2 and Shadow the Hedgehog all took place in the united federation, the country where several sonic games take place. SA1 took place in station square, the beggining of SA2 took place in central city, and shadow the hedgehog took place all over, one level was central city, one level was westopolis, one of them was prison island

Lol I agree. Shadow looked so out of place next to Commander. Plus the 'realistic' humans looked so weird... Yet the cartoony style seemed a little out of place to me as well... I think Sega would be better to opt for a more 'anime' look for their humans, like in Sonic X. Chris and them weren;t 100% anime, or 100% realistic person. And maybe everyone changing is a sideeffect of Eggman's thingy that NO ONE noticed. Lol Exept us.

Oh no! Eggman turned everyone in the world chubby, so that he doesn't look quite as fat by comparison!
also, he blew up the planet, but eh, who gives a %$#" with economy these days.

Well, at least in SA1 the humans were sorta anime style.
SA2, had realistic humans, but not as realistic as in Shadow and 06.

that's really caused by the evolution of the graphics more than a change in the art style though.

My guess is that either Mobians resides in animal ghettos, or SEGA tries to avoid having animal citizens for they might be confused for new characters instead background characters...

I think it might be the second reason, hence my suggestion of holding a fan character contest to populate the hub worlds in future games.

I think the way the comic book makes humans look realistic while keeping the semi cartoon look works as a good medium if you ask me, but then if you look at the 30 years later four part series, you'll see some humans in the background.
But then again I think the only human, if he is, that looked anywhere near good was Robotnik over Elis.
Unleashed was however a nice cartoony look that fit well, but I think if they wanted to do a good version of realistic, they could pull it off, but only if they gave it to people like Bioware, like they did with the DS game. They know what their doing there.
But more to the point, I think that the only way sega can have more then just sonic, his firends, and any new characters is if they take the mobius from the comic or SatAM to make it work(and if the writers where able to, they would have said mobius was our earth in the future in a later episode in season 3 So you could have humans mixed in with mobians that way).

well, its a lot easier to make a bunch of people with standard features than designing a bunch of animals with different species, features, colors, and im sure you can put a bunch of the same person in a group (since people really do look the same) but you would have to make all the animals look diffferent
but, all that aside, i have always wondered why that was!

this gives me an idea, a fan character contest. Just like the fanart contest from SATKB, but this time the winners would have the fan character they submit made into an NPC in the game hubworld, that way they could have a nice mix of human and mobian characters.

I really don't like the concept of Sonic and his friends transported from another world and live in the human world. I think they should have stayed on Mobius.
And I agree about there should be animal/mobian NPCs in the games, Sega should ask their fans to submit fan-made characters for them to use.

that plot point is only for the anime, Sonic adventure was a huge retcon, essentially it said "yes, Sonic lives on earth like everyone else, and always did." The other world/dimension thing is from the comic book or the cartoons.

Animal Population Theory
I think Sonic and co are the only animals of that type, it's just they they're involved in so many large scale events that they've become very well known to the world at large

I doubt it, since almost every game introduces at least one more character. There must be a population of these things somewhere, unless every mobian is also a superhero somehow. I think the makers of the game just don't want to "use up" potential character designs so they use humans whenever possible.

KTUOS In reply to Wakeangel2001 [2010-01-08 18:03:08 +0000 UTC]
I suppose but mostly they seem to come from diffent places lately, Shade, Blaze and Marine from another universe, Silver from the future, Big from deep in Mystic Ruins, Shadow was locked up Rouge and the Babylon Rogues are theives so they probably kept a low profile and Chaos and Tikal from the Past/The master emerald. I've probably forgotten somebody (I don't currently own any current gen consoles unless you count the DS)
I await your reply and obviously from what sega seems to be thinking lately (each
game needs a load of new character) running out of characters could be a thaught but considering there are over 12 characters under 18 years old but only one parent I'd suggest they are comming from a non-earth source

We as fans are simply over thinking it, my original complaint is that we lack cartoon animals in the civilian population (there were some in Rush adventure, but that's in Blaze's world.) The one true reason could be that the game designers simply didn't think to put them in, and the existing characters don't have families (except Cream) because they simply aren't relevant to the story. Like when you watch a TV show, they don't need to show you every time the characters eat a meal or use the bathroom. The only reason Vanilla was in the game at all was so that Eggman could kidnap her, otherwise there would have been no reason to put her in.

that's segregation, and that's wrong. Maybe if the Sega guys can't be bothered to design some mobian background characters they can have another contest where they ask the fans to submit some of their fan characters, like with the black knight fanart contest but even more awesome.

Yeah, I found Unleashed pretty weird for the lack of Mobians.
You know, Sonic problemly did got transported to earth like in Sonic X. This is why I like the first episode as it gives you an idea how Sonic got to the blasted human world.

I personally find it funny that none of Sonic's group think its weird, even Tails isn't surprised by Proffesor Pickles looking different, nor does Sonic (who, if I remember correctly, is in Werhog form). Course the fact that they all look cartoony allows people to know mock Shadow for being so serious, it affects the humans in his flashbacks.

I really agree with jeremiefan13 that in Pokemon and Zelda games you can move around the stages and even go in to peoples houses. In Sonic Unleashed you can't do that and it sucks. I also agree with everyone that there should have been more furrys in this game.

well, I've been looking at every review I could for the game, and the virtually universal consensus is that the Wii version gets higher marks than the 360/PS3 version. I think it's because the Wii version mostly does away with that RPG type hub world in favor of getting to the action stages faster. The hub world is nice when you aren't doing anything, but when it takes you a half hour to find the next level I imagine it takes a lot of the fun factor out of the game.

So true. Also, I find it funny how in Pokemon and Legend of Zelda games, you can just walk into people's houses and completely ransack them, stealing everything they own; and they're watching you do this.
