Description I'm calling this done. Mostly because I was starting to feel like I was fighting with it rather than improving it.

.5mm 2B, HB, .3mm B,2H, 4H Graphite pencils. Strathmore 500 Series Bristol.

About 200 hours (mostly because I'm really slow)

Thanks. It was crazy tedious, but it came out decent.

Thank you.

It's unusual to get a comment that isn't "OMFG" or something like that. Those comments are cool, but they offer nothing in the way of constructive feedback. I'd be interested in where you see problems or room for improvement in this piece.

haha..well, i didnt mean to be mean, if you know what i mean....(hahah!!)..but, i thought it could've been better....
don't get me wrong, i can see how much of an a** it can be drawing water, but yea, again, it could be better...probably more detail given would do it good..plus, the drawing in general should have a greater scope of tonal values, (meaning the lights, mediums and darks)...
as for the figure, more effort could be put in to make it more realistic, (meaning the figure's body proportions and stuff), and also the details making it photorealistic...
again, i have to commend on your attempt to draw water, coz i personally wouldnt even imagine starting to draw it..haha...
(check out my gallery to see what i mean...)

you're welcome on the honest opinion, coz i believe if i joined the rest to give you OMFG's, you wont really improve in your work..so, yea...

Thanks.

You mentioned some of the things I was dissatisfied with. The anatomy of the surfer was tough. It is actually pretty accurate from the reference photo, but it seems like an unnatural pose. Anyone that is not familiar with surfing seems to find it strange. This piece is also the last time I used a grid. I decided after doing it that a grid breaks things up in an unnatural way and I don't think about things like tonality as much as I should.

Thanks again for your thoughts.

hahah...i dun think the pose was unnatural, he IS surfing, so that's the pose you'd get i suppose..
but yea, i've said what i thought needed improvement..

no problem man, keep it up!

Haha, I have a new found respect fo this image... I'm currently working on an image that I'm nearly 70 hours into, and man... I couldn't help but think of this recently. I'm not sure if I'll ever get in a background, but I'm nearly 3/4th completed... so, I'm looking at maybe a good 100 hours of work... quite rediculous considering my subjects are anthro. But that's not what it's about then is it? It's about putting your heart and soul into a piece, it's all about the art man, and I'm sure you know all about that.

Take it easy, yo.

wavefreak In reply to Lupinator [2007-01-30 22:10:28 +0000 UTC]

I'm curious now. Make sure you let me know when you post it. I never really thought about how much time I put into it. I just kept plugging away at it, focussing on getting the look I wanted. If a drawing takes a few hours, cool. If it takes hours and hours to get what you want, that's cool too. So,yeah. It's definately about heart and soul.

Lupinator In reply to wavefreak [2007-01-31 11:36:36 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I'll link ya, it may not interest you too much though. :\

That's right though, do as much as it takes to get what you want--work as long as it takes to make your heart content, a lot of people don't have that kinda dedication though.

Wow, this is unbelievable. Ha, it didn't really take you 200 hours to make this, right? But I could beleive it took a very long time, regardless. I work at a snails pace too and I would have given up long ago on this image.

It may mean I am not entirely sane, but it actually it took considerably more than 200 hours.

Lupinator In reply to wavefreak [2006-08-22 00:18:38 +0000 UTC]

Jeezes... I couldn't fathom putting that amount of time into my artwork... I mean, for me, about 20+ hours in like an eternity, and my average single character drawings take about 5-14 hours each. And, I honestly thought *that* was slow. You deserve a +Fav man, not only because it's a great drawing, but out of sheer recognition for the amount of effort you must have put into this beast.

It only goes to show though, that the amount of time you put into something is a direct reflection of the quality of what's produced.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

wavefreak In reply to Lupinator [2006-08-22 01:00:09 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the fav. At times working on that drawing felt more like a WWF wrestling match where I was losing badly For me anthro and anime fall in the same category. They are both very popular, there is alot of average work, but when you see a really good piece it still can make you stop and look. That's when I know I like something - when my eyes are compelled to linger on it and just keep finding more to look at. I guess that's true for any genre. Your piece did that.

Keep your head low over there. If the news is even half true, it seems as if bad things can happen just about anywhere.

Lupinator In reply to wavefreak [2006-08-22 02:02:30 +0000 UTC]

Again, thanks for the warm comments, and I feel the same way about artwork. I can pretty much enjoy anything... but it's the best examples of it that I'll take interest in, and if they've manage to do something unique with it that I've never really seen before.

I really liked you drawing and I feel bad that I forgot to +Fav it the first time around. Take care man!

And, oh yeah, I'm keepin' my head pretty low.
