Description I'm calling this done. Mostly because I was starting to feel like I was fighting with it rather than improving it.

.5mm 2B, HB, .3mm B,2H, 4H Graphite pencils. Strathmore 500 Series Bristol.

About 200 hours (mostly because I'm really slow)

WIPs are now in scraps.

titanic work; how did you do the black spots if you say you had 4H-> B pencils? i use H, HB, 3B ,6B and 9B but i don't have 0,3 mm pencil...
this is like whoa!!!!

wavefreak In reply to lokzaza [2006-05-15 23:49:49 +0000 UTC]

I used 4h -> 2B. 2B was for the darkest. The trick is to lay down the graphite in multiple layers. Each layer you press harder with the pencil and with a more vertical angle. The stroke needs to be in multiple directions so it fills the tooth of the paper well. The best stroke is little tiny circles. If you play around with doing it this way until you figure out the exact way that works best for you you can get really nice darks with alot less of the shinyness you commonly get with graphite.

Thanks for looking.

You got some nice Spidey drawings in your gallery. I always liked the web slinger. Didn't know he had a daughter. Guess I got old and forgot about comics.

Great job! I like working with a grid, but my son tells that's cheating.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

wavefreak In reply to jonsmom [2006-05-01 13:31:34 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for your kind words.

Ask your son if using a paint brush is cheating. Maybe he should just use his fingers. Then point out to him that the paint brush is a tool. Everything we do uses tools. A tool in the hands of a master will produce completely different results in a beginner's hands. If he doubts this analogy, have him Google Vermeer and Camera Obscura.

jonsmom In reply to wavefreak [2006-05-01 17:35:35 +0000 UTC]

I like the way you think! He actually gave in a used a grid for his last drawing and is quite pleased with the result.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

wavefreak In reply to jonsmom [2006-05-01 20:14:55 +0000 UTC]

See. Mom's always right!!

I figure that very few people get rich doing this. So you have to enjoy it. If using a grid helps you enjoy the process then who cares what others think. And there's times you definately wouldn't use a grid anyway. So everybody wins.
