Description
This shot represents over 100 years of technology. For its day, the watch made by Waltham in the late 1800,s was highly accurate. Today it still runs with an accuracy that rivals some digital watches. The background is a computer card, which also requires timing to function. However, while the watch meaures time in seconds, the card measures it in nano-SECONDS.
Technology has brought us many things. There have been many changes and improvements, but sometimes, old technology is as functional and far more beautiful than the new.

the contrast is totally controlled by the studio lighting. I use a low contrast setting on my camera that I use for studio work. I also use an ADOBE RGB Colour profile which dampens colour saturation and contrast.

the watch looks handmade, the chipset is factory assembled - very interesting. one can only tell time, while there was so much effort put into create it. the other can run millions of calculations a minute and took only minutes to assemble.

I am not sure if the watch is hand made, but that would not take away from the insight of your comment, because at minimum, it would be hand assembled. I tend to think that craftsmanship has been lost in much that we do today. I does however continue to be alive in the artistic community. Perhaps that is why people have an interest in art?
Thanks a lot for your comment. It opened a door on this image that up to this point had not been expressed. In my mind what you have said has contributed in a postive and constructive way to understanding this image.

I have always loved older technology because of the beauty and craftsmanship that was built into it. But I have also learned to see beauty in new technology. For me, this image demonstrates that blend.

I guess everything has its own beauty. But still, I think I prefer the delicacy (I hope this is the correct word!) of the old things. And the fact that many of them are hand made makes them even more amazing! Today everything is made in a factory. Even if it looks beautiful, it lacks that beauty old things have I believe, just for that reason.

Oh..I very much agree. That is why I used the term craftsmanship. It implies something that ius had made, original and artistic inthe making process. All of that has been lost with mechanization. Things made today are VERY consisitent, but lack the qualities of hand made objects.

Nice piece! I especially like it because I work in Surface Mount Technology (SMT) The machines that place the parts are amazing. I've also hand soldered parts onto boards including the fine pitch 200 pin QFP in that pic. Awesome detail that you've captured. I love the gears in the watch. Its simply amazing and beautiful.
