Description
The Phantom of the Opera (also known as Erik) -- perhaps my favourite character of all time, but I think Elphaba just beats him.Anyway, I based this illustration on the Phantom’s description in the original novel, Le Fantôme de L’Opéra by Gaston Leroux. Unlike the handsome actors who have played Erik in the many Andrew Lloyd Webber productions, the original Phantom looked like a corpse from head to foot, not just on half of his face. It is also said that he was abnormally tall, had very long fingers, eyes that glow red in the dark and no nose.
Another thing, the notes you can see on Erik’s cummerbund form part of the Dies Irae, a piece of music for which he has great respect (in the book, this hymn appears on the walls of his lair). Erik’s own magnum opus, Don Juan Triumphant, is lying at his feet.
I know this portrayal is a bit cartoony. I have a friend who’s a great fan of Erik and didn’t like this painting all that much. I started a more realistic version, but stopped after a while. I like cartoony better.

I think his eyes are supposed to be yellow, not red, but still very cute!

I've just read the book for the first time. Your Erik is peeeerfect ! Exactly the way I imagined him. I don't like the awesome men movies show. Erik is not at all like that. The relationship between him and Christine is far more interesting if he's repulsive, in my opinion. I love your colors and the look on his face, bored and sad.

I know, I feel like they downplay the disfiguration in the play (although I kind of understand why they do it; having a full mask surrounding the mouth would mess with the sound a bit). Regardless, it's so cool to see this portrayal

Creepy and accurate... I like your style. One thing, though... weren't his eyes yellow, not red?

I love how you took time to add in the little details in his costuming (skull topped cane, craveat pin, musical score on the cummerbund, ragged edges of the cape) and how truely corpselike you show his body to be. Bravisima!

I love it! I have read the original novel by Gaston Leroux (and I actually do believe that the Phantom did exist! xD) But this is so close to how I pictured him looking!...And yet, I think I'd still kiss the crap outta that guy...

This is a superb drawing and I love anything that portrays him as Leroux describes - after all, just having half a face looking bad isn't too bad - I have a friend with worse and they don't go hiding in basements and wearing a mask! Looking like a living corpse from head to foot though, now that might justify some serious self-esteem issues... So well done!
But just a note - I'm pretty sure Erik's eyes are supposed to glow yellow, not red. According to Leroux.

Okay, so I knew about the corpse part, but not the red eyes and nose part (I saw The Phantom of the Opera when I was really litte and have yet to read the book). I'm also a big Harry Potter fan, so you'll have to forgive my reaction of screaming, "He's Voldemort!" when I read the description. And I like your very beautiful (despite the description) drawing.

I think one of the reasons why the Phantom looked like a corpse was because he never ate and he lived in the caverns underneath the Opera house. Also, I remember in the book it said he didn't eat that one time when he had lunch with Christine.

Possibly anorexic, but I think the not eating was actually due to the mask being in the way. With it covering his whole face, he would probably have to remove the mask to eat comfortably. He's not going to do that in company!

is it sad that when i read the book this is the only way i could picture him, none of the other characters, just him as a cartoon. no clue why.

Red eyes? According to what translation? I have about five different english versions and one in french, and they all say he has yellow eyes. Is yours in Italian? I've heard the Italian translation says red eyes.
Anyway, the detail is amazing and I particularly like his cane. It's a nice touch.

I really like this interpretation. Though, I did not much care for the Phantom's character in Gaston Leroux's novel, as I found Erik to be overly whiny and childish, and thus, much of the romance of his character was lost for me. And as a side-note, I had an intense desire to punch Christine out as well for similar reasons. Anyway, this is a very intelligent, subdued, meloncholy, and elegant Phantom, and I find that I am still in love with the character when I look at this, even in his corpse-like form. The colours and emotion are beautiful. Very skillfully done : )
