Description
The Phantom of the Opera (also known as Erik) -- perhaps my favourite character of all time, but I think Elphaba just beats him.Anyway, I based this illustration on the Phantom’s description in the original novel, Le Fantôme de L’Opéra by Gaston Leroux. Unlike the handsome actors who have played Erik in the many Andrew Lloyd Webber productions, the original Phantom looked like a corpse from head to foot, not just on half of his face. It is also said that he was abnormally tall, had very long fingers, eyes that glow red in the dark and no nose.
Another thing, the notes you can see on Erik’s cummerbund form part of the Dies Irae, a piece of music for which he has great respect (in the book, this hymn appears on the walls of his lair). Erik’s own magnum opus, Don Juan Triumphant, is lying at his feet.
I know this portrayal is a bit cartoony. I have a friend who’s a great fan of Erik and didn’t like this painting all that much. I started a more realistic version, but stopped after a while. I like cartoony better.

This is fantastic! Yeah, if it wasn't for "Theatrical Purposes" Erik would have the full mask in all renditions. Broadway originally had the full mask (hence the poster being the way it is), but because the full mask hid facial expression, something had to be done about it. Great job though! I love the expression!

This is a wonderful portrayal. Even with the more cartoony style you've managed to preserve the general creepiness, horror and tragedy that surrounds the Phantom.
I never liked the half-mask thing with the handsome actors (except for the on-stage versions where it was more for practicality than appearances). More particularly in the recent version with Gerard Butler I felt like the director cheated the audience out of the true revulsion and heartbreak of the character simply to preserve the good looks of the actor (lord knows that man could have had the entire half of his face melted off and still remained somewhat swoon-worthy).
I'm very happy to see the phantom presented in his true shocking glory. Well done!

You know "The Phantom" by Susan Kay? It's Eriks Biography and your pic makes me think of something the Persian Khanum said: "You're so ugly, that it's almost atractive again in a strange way."
Love your version. ^-^ But maybe he hast to much hair XD

I absolutely adore this. As much as I like Andrew Lloyd Webber's portrayal, and I do love it to bits, I love it when people go back to the orgins and draw the real Erik. I absolutely love everything, especially the cummerbund and his physical form/appearance.

Nice picture. It reminds me of my one of my friends work she did in art last year, she was inspired by something similar she saw at the SABSA Art show... or something like that. Anyways, nice work.

Oooh, very nice. I'm so glad you portrayed the novel version- my only been with the new movie was that Eric was impeccably handsome, except for some moderately bad acne looking stuff on about a quarter of his face. I felt it kind of cheapened his character: "Dear God, somebody get that man some Proactive!"

I love the cartoony style! I think you captured his character very, very well. I'm also a huge fan of the spats on his shoes. HOORAY. And all the details are just fabulous... his cane for instance. Amazing.

I love this picture long time! I watched the Lon Chaney version of the movie last night, and both his representation and yours make me appreciate the Phantom because they're both true to source material, unlike the Andrew Lloyd Webber versions. BRAVO!

I like how Lon Chaney portrayed him. He wasn't as tall, but it's pretty accurate...
The description also reminds me of Voldemort. No nose, Red eyes. I think Bellatrix would like the Phantom!

Yeah, Lon Chaney was awesome! It's a pitty they didn't have the computer effects to actually remove his nose back then though (as opposed to Voldemort).

OMG, Voldemort.
They should do a harry potter version of Phantom of the Opera.
(and yeah, it is a pity about the nose, though it makes it even more impressive that Lon was able to achieve the same effect without any effects added)

Anyway, just wanted to say that this is fantastic <33

It wasn't just a kind comment, either. I meant it. I am not an idle reviewer. If I comment on something, it was either very good (as in this case) or I knew the person personally or there was some specific reason I commented. May I contact you if I find I need an illustrator for a project?
